Job Description:

Louisiana State University invites applications for the position of Assistant Medical Director. Located in the Student Health Center (SHC) and reporting to the Medical Director, the Assistant Medical Director is responsible for providing student-focused leadership and serves as a lead clinical member in the primary care clinic, the specialty clinics, and the supporting ancillary services as well as providing direct patient care. The Assistant Director must possess a deep appreciation for a collaborative care model and a commitment to advancing the divisional priorities and cultivating a working relationship with Our Lady of the Lake Health.

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS POSITION:

 

  • Delivers high-quality, evidence-based medical care to the student population, with a focus on preventive, maintenance, and restorative health services.
  • Provides direct primary care for students, including assessment, testing, diagnosis, treatment and referral, performs minor surgical procedures and documents care in the electronic health record, employing care protocols and proper coding.
  • Provides essential support to the Medical Director in key clinical and administrative functions and assumes the role of acting clinical lead during their absence, overseeing clinical decision-making, staff coordination, and response to urgent operational issues.
  • Identifies and evaluates strategic opportunities and provide consultative recommendations to the Medical Director and senior leadership.
  • Supports Medical Director for medical quality improvement efforts, coordinating peer review and credentialing, facilitating studies, updating policies and procedures based on standards and/or best practice, and supporting accreditation activities.

Support Provider Development and Clinical Education

The Student Health Center is committed to maintaining a clinical team that is prepared to respond to the evolving health needs of the student population. The Assistant Medical Director will have the opportunity to support provider development through mentorship, clinical education, and shared learning. Working together with the Medical Director, the Assistant Medical Director will need to identify educational needs, assist with clinical in-services, and reinforce the consistent use of current evidence-based practices.


Enhance Quality and Safety

Providing safe, reliable, and high-quality care requires an ongoing commitment to evaluation, learning, and improvement. The Assistant Medical Director will contribute to quality and safety efforts through the review of clinical outcomes, patient feedback, and peer review findings. There is an opportunity to help identify areas for improvement and assist with implementing and sustaining agreed-upon changes in practice.


Improve Access and Clinical Operations

As the student population and demand for services continue to evolve, the Student Health Center must regularly assess how students access and move through care. The Assistant Medical Director has the opportunity to provide clinical insight into scheduling and patient flow, and the use of primary care, specialty, nursing, and ancillary services in order to support timely access, continuity of care, and effective student experience.


Increase Interdisciplinary Collaboration

The Student Health Center’s collaborative care model depends on strong communication and coordination across SHC units, university departments, and external partners. The Assistant Medical Director will help foster productive working relationships, support shared approaches to student care, and address barriers that affect coordination, referrals, and continuity of services.

ABOUT THE DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS PRIORITIES:


Three priorities guide our work in the Division of Student Affairs. Foremost, we maintain a commitment to quality which is rooted in the belief that LSU students deserve our best effort. Every interaction we have with students should communicate care, relevance, polish, and attention to detail. We work to ensure every space, place, and staff-to-student interaction communicates a sense of home to students. Finally, we design programs, services, events, and experiences with everyone in mind.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Direct Student Care: 60%

Provides direct primary care for students, including assessment, testing, diagnosis, treatment and referral; performs minor surgical procedures; documents care in the electronic health record, employing care protocols and proper coding; provides consultation on complex or high-risk cases in the absence of the Medical Director.


Leadership & Administration: 25%

Provides essential support to the Medical Director in key clinical and administrative functions and assumes the role of acting clinical lead during their absence, overseeing clinical decision-making, staff coordination, and response to urgent operational issues. Provides training, guidance, and supervision of designated providers. Identify and evaluate strategic opportunities and provide consultative recommendations to the Medical Director and senior leadership. Assists with other administrative and workflow matters as needed to optimize quality, efficiency and access.

 

Quality Control & Compliance: 10%

Supports Medical Director for medical quality improvement efforts, coordinating peer review and credentialing, facilitating studies, updating policies and procedures based on standards and/or best practice, and supporting accreditation activities. Works closely with FMOL's Quality Team, sharing data and recommendations that benefit both institutions.


Other Duties: 5%

Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director and Medical Director. This includes but is not limited to efforts that support broad division/institution efforts including engaging in in-service opportunities for the division, and other special projects.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Unencumbered Louisiana MD or DO License
  • Current ABMS Board Certification in Primary Care or Emergency Medicine
  • Current DEA and CDS Certificates
  • Three years of clinical medical experience.
  • Some experience in maintaining nationally recognized accreditation standards such as Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations or Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and some experience on process improvement and health care systems/ models.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Five years of clinical medical experience.
  • Experience in a college health setting; experience supervising and evaluating other clinicians.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS/EXPECTATIONS:


Due to the nature of the position and/or position responsibilities, this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67.

 

This position may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18.

 

Ability and willingness to work some evening and weekend hours.
