The Assistant Director Library of Public Services and Customer Experience is a key leader in shaping how Pima County Public Library serves and connects with the community. Working closely with the Deputy Director of Public Services and Customer Experience, this position provides strategic leadership for public-facing services and supervises and supports Library Services Managers in translating organizational priorities into effective services, programs, and operations. As a member of the library’s administration team, the Assistant Director builds strong relationships and represents the library with staff, community members, County departments, government agencies, community organizations, and other partners.

 

This role provides visible, approachable, and collaborative leadership supporting managers, guiding the organization through change, and fostering a culture of accountability, inclusion, and high-quality public service. The successful candidate will bring leadership experience and a strong commitment to equity, community connection, and consistent, responsive service across Pima County Public Libraries.

 

Success in this position will require sound judgment, diplomacy, discretion, adaptability, and strong communication skills while advancing shared goals, strengthening public services, and providing leadership to address complex customer, personnel, operational, and community matters.


This position requires the ability to report to, and travel between, assigned library locations during the workday within a reasonable timeframe.

Essential Functions:

  • Participates in administrative team leadership activities by developing and implementing strategic plans, policies, guidelines, and initiatives;
  • Oversees daily operations to ensure efficient, consistent service across all library locations;
  • Supervises, mentors, and evaluates staff; supports professional development and team cohesion;
  • Participates in budget planning, grant development, and resource allocation;
  • Leads and provides support for major projects, including technology upgrades, facility improvements, operational enhancements, and program expansions;
  • Collaborates with community partners, schools, and local organizations to expand outreach and programming;
  • Represents the library at community events, board meetings, and professional gatherings;
  • Supports the development and evaluation of programs, services, and collections that reflect community needs;
  • Identifies opportunities for continuous improvement and engages teams in associated change management efforts.

Minimum Qualifications: 


Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science, Education, Public Administration, Public Policy, Communications, Social Work, Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field, as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment, AND at least six years of directly related experience in library administration, public administration, finance, or a related field, which INCLUDES three years of management level supervision of assigned staff.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):


  • Minimum five (5) years progressive leadership experience in a public library system, including supervision of managers, multidisciplinary teams, and system-wide operations.
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and developing managers and teams, including setting clear expectations, providing feedback, holding staff accountable for performance and results, building collaboration, and supporting growth and change.
  • Experience planning, developing and implementing organization-wide strategies, programs, or initiatives that improve services, customer or community experience, access, and equity.
  • Experience using data, feedback, and other information to evaluate services, set priorities, allocate resources, identify improvements, and support organizational decisions.
  • Experience building effective relationships with diverse communities, government agencies, organizations, and other partners, with strong communication, collaboration, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Master’s degree in library and information science (MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution.
  • Experience communicating clearly with internal and external stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience drafting and implementing guidelines, policies, and procedures, incorporating feedback from a variety of stakeholders.

Selection Procedure: 
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process. 


Supplemental Information:


Licenses and Certificates: Some positions require a valid Arizona Class D driver license at the time of application or appointment. Failure to obtain / maintain the required licensure shall be grounds for termination.
