LOCATION: Georgia or California   

FLSA STATUS: Exempt  

COMPENSATION: $60,000 - $80,000 USD

OUR STORY 

THE CHICAGO CUBS FRANCHISE, a charter member of Major League Baseball’s National League since 1876, has won the National League pennant 17 times and was the first team to win back-to-back World Series titles in the 1907 and 1908 seasons. In 2016, the Chicago Cubs made history again when the team won its first World Series in 108 years, ending the longest championship drought in North American sports. Known for its ivy-covered outfield walls, hand-operated scoreboard and famous Marquee, iconic Wrigley Field has been the home of the Chicago Cubs since 1916 and is the second oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball. In 2009, the Ricketts family assumed ownership of the Chicago Cubs and established three main goals for the organization: Win the World Series, Preserve and Improve Wrigley Field, and Be a Good Neighbor.  

HOW YOU’LL CONTRIBUTE 

The Area Scout is responsible for leading the Chicago Cubs’ amateur scouting efforts within their assigned territory. This includes identifying and developing expertise on relevant players, gathering and verifying prospect information such as background, medical, video, and performance data, and building trusted relationships with players, parents, and coaches to develop a complete and accurate understanding of each draft-eligible player in the region. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, a self-starter mindset, and willingness to collaborate with Amateur Leadership to support draft and signing decisions. 

 

The Area Scout will report directly to the VP of Amateur Scouting and the Regional Coordinators, while operating under the supervision of the Director, Amateur Scouting Operations. Travel will be extensive.  

 

Area Scout Work Locations Include: 

  • Georgia  

  • Central California 

 

Travel Requirements: 

The area scout will be required to drive and fly to games within and potentially outside of their area. Travel is to be expected on a weekly and often daily basis during primary scouting months (February – June).  

 

Work and Availability Requirements: 

The area scout will be expected to carry out their responsibilities on both weekdays and weekends during the primary scouting months; hours will vary throughout the year.   

 

THE DAY-TO-DAY: 

  • Identify draft-eligible players within the assigned territory by attending relevant games, showcases, and workouts  

  • Collaborating with the front office, R&D, and Player Development to provide insights and coordinate evaluation processes for players of interest 

  • Conduct thorough prospect due diligence by collecting and verifying background information, medical records, performance data, and other relevant details to support accurate player evaluations and informed scouting decisions 

  • Provide clear, timely, and consistent written and verbal assessments on players  

  • Capture and upload data and video on players in the area as requested by the office  

  • Develop trusted relationships with players, families, coaches, advisors, trainers, and other key stakeholders 

  • Participate in draft preparation meetings, both regional & national, & the execution of the MLB Draft as requested by the office 

WHAT YOU’LL BRING: 

  • High school degree or GED equivalent required  

  • Significant baseball / background experience transferrable to evaluating and projecting baseball players across levels  

  • No prior technological experience is necessary, but the scout will need to develop video capabilities as explained by the Club and the ability to effectively use internal Club computer platforms and technology tools 

  • Strong organization and time-management skills and the ability to work well independently  

  • Must be comfortable communicating and building relationships with different stakeholders 

  • Must possess strong oral & written communication skills with ability to communicate verbal & written updates to supervisors  

  • Prior experience with general work productivity tools (e.g. Microsoft Office, Outlook, Slack, etc.) 

  • Willingness to learn with the ability to quickly adapt and improve scouting processes  

  • Must have a passion for baseball and the MLB draft
