Background

The European Infrastructure finance team works in a fast paced, dynamic environment. This role promises to be varied and interesting, with a steep learning curve, covering the breadth of the evolving Infrastructure markets.

Our team is reflective of CIBC’s global values in terms of its diversity and inclusiveness and this role will provide an excellent entry point to these sectors for the right individual.

The infrastructure team is active in a wide range of multi-faceted sectors including Transport assets (Ports, Rail, Airports),Transmission Networks, District Heating and increasingly Digital and value add infrastructure.  As a result, the team cover a substantial part of the Infrastructure market.    

League table performance has been elevated in recent years across the European platform, and the infrastructure team, has an outsized market presence vis a vis our scale and footprint in our chosen sectors.  This team sits in one of the most active North American Banks in the European market from a capital deployment perspective.

Purpose of Job

The Analyst will be expected to use a broad range of analytical and research skills to support all of the professionals within the Corporate Banking group, in executing mandates to support and widen client relationships in the Infrastructure sectors in Europe. 

Main Objectives & Requirements of the Role

  • Assist in executing all facets of the group’s mandates

  • Assist with the review of due diligence materials and legal documentation including the co-ordination of questions / comments and interface with external independent advisers (e.g., technical, commercial, financial, insurance and legal).

  • Assist more senior colleagues in preparing detailed documents including business proposals, memoranda, credit and business approval requests, loan recommendations, and company information documents and reports for various purposes.

  • Assist with preparation of presentations as and when required. Liaising with colleagues from across the Bank (e.g., Investment Banking, Debt Capital Markets and Trading Floor) to co-ordinate and prepare ad hoc pitch books.

  • Lead the modelling workstream on debt advisory/co-ordination pitches and mandates.

  • Assist with the desktop ratings ratings analysis using external rating agency methodologies like S&P, Moody’s, Fitch, KBRA and DBRS.

  • Prepare amendment and waiver requests and undertake annual reviews for existing Borrowers.

  • Responsible for both quantitative and qualitative client analysis and industry research.

  • Maintain group’s databases on a current basis including electronic records and regular administrative reports.

  • Responsible for defined internal processes, including generating internal credit ratings, assessing deals economics and KYC/compliance. 

  • Establish peer network across the Bank to ensure inter-departmental collaboration and gather relevant information. Over time, attend investor presentation days and client meetings supporting more senior colleagues.

  • Must be able to accept flexibility in required personal time commitments to complete daily and weekly work assignments.

The role of an analyst is challenging and fast-paced.  It requires dedication and enthusiasm to learn more about the industries which span the breadth of the infrastructure sectors, a sincere interest in the clients covered, and a proactive work ethic.

Skills & Knowledge Required

  • Undergraduate degree preferably (but not essential) in finance, economics, engineering or another complementary discipline. 

  • Debt advisory experience, with a strong emphasis on building financial models from scratch, particularly the financing tab, and performing sensitivity analysis as part of the credit assessment and underwriting process.

  • Experience working with one of the top three credit rating agencies (S&P, Moody’s, or Fitch), or relevant ratings advisory experience supporting clients through the ratings process.

  • Knowledge of business, accounting, economics and/or finance acquired through education or experience.

  • Strong technical skills and computer literacy (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Bloomberg).

  • Service oriented approach when dealing with colleagues and product partners internally and clients and advisers externally.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written, including the ability to clearly and succinctly explain results of detailed analyses.  As experience grows, defend recommendations to internal business and credit committees.

  • The ability to perform well within a demanding and dynamic team environment.

  • Proactive attitude and good ability to multi-task between diverse types of work from written to financial modelling as well as across different clients and sectors/ businesses.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the assessment of unstructured problems.

  • Superior analytical and quantitative skills.

  • Output driven with attention to detail and a strong sense of accountability.

  • A proven academic track record.
