Job Description:

An OAP Mgr Clinical Nurse Specialist is a clinician and administrative leader who supports the enhancement of Clinical Nurse Specialists within the OU Health system. An OAP Mgr Clinical Nurse Specialist works closely with OAP leadership, clinical department physician leadership, clinical department operational and nursing leaders, and interprofessional colleagues on advancing the care of patients across the health system and in all practice areas.

Clinical Practice Portion: Performs as the clinical expert in evidence-based practice within specific patient population. Responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating patient-specific and population-based programs of care for assigned patient population. Develops and implements innovative alternative solutions that address system problems or patient care issues in collaboration with the service's interdisciplinary team. Supports and/or conducts nursing research to further the body of evidence-based nursing practice. Provides leadership in advancing the practice of nursing. Serves as a change agent through individual and team coaching and participation in committees, task forces, and projects system-wide.

Essential Job Duties

  • Responsible for collaboration and contribution to the strategic vision for assigned area in collaboration with OAP, Physician teams, and operations/business/nursing leaders.
  • Supports key strategic initiatives and goals of the Office for Advanced Practice.
  • Supports OAP and system wide projects that are aimed at advancing clinical care, education, and research initiatives.
  • Serves as a resource for APP related questions/issues for health system partners.
  • Participates in interprofessional partnerships to best support high quality care for the patients and their families at OU Health.
  • Facilitates hiring & orientation of new CNS (in collaboration with business and medical leaders, and any applicable unit APP leadership).
  • Oversees FPPE/OPPE requirements, including any proctoring, are completed as outlined (if needed).
  • Performance evaluations in collaboration with Physician/Operational and key stakeholders as applicable.
  • Time, attendance, and schedule oversite in collaboration with practice team.
  • Facilitates CME discussions and support to access clinically relevant continuing education opportunities. responsible for CME approval and tracking.
  • Remains current on national and regional trends and changes within the CNS role, the organization, and health care delivery system.

  • Clinical department reporting for practice responsibilities, as applicable.

Clinical Essential Responsibilities

  • Clinical: Performs history and physical assessments of patients that are accurate, complete, concise, relevant and appropriate for age, gender, and clinical problem.  Orders appropriate diagnostic studies and correctly interprets results.  Develops, implements, evaluates, and alters the plan of care as needed.  Maintains accurate, complete, concise, and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Patient Care: Provides care that is patient and family centered, compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness and treatment of disease throughout the lifespan.  Facilitates consistent, coordinated care and clear communication among all members of the healthcare team.  Incorporates the patient and family in care planning and treatment across settings.  Considers cost effectiveness and risk/benefit analysis when making decisions about patient care.  Uses evidenced-based medicine to systematically analyze and improve patient care practices.  Develops, evaluates, and implements standards of care within area of specialization (policies, protocols, etc.)
  • Research: Participates in research opportunities to advance the care and treatment of patients.
  • Communication: Communicates and collaborates effectively with physicians, other health professionals, and health related agencies.  Counsels and educates patients and families.  Serves as an advocate for patients and families in navigating the health care system.
  • Activities: Participates in
  • education of students and other health care professionals.  Participates in organizational and departmental meetings, educational opportunities, committees, and workgroups, as necessary.  Participates in quality initiative/performance activities.  Promote interdisciplinary practice and implement strategies to overcome barriers to collaboration.

General Responsibilities:

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduate of an accredited school of Professional Nursing. MSN Required

Experience: 3 or more years of experience as an Advanced Practice Provider in the CNS role and

3 years of progressive leadership experience required.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required:

 Active APRN-CNS license in State of Oklahoma

Must obtain prescriptive authority within 30 days of onboarding.

Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire.
