Hiring Range: $56,555 - $67,870 Annually

The Pima County Department of Finance & Risk Management is looking for a skilled, motivated professional accountant I to join their Financial Control & Reporting (FC&R) Division. The FC&R Division is responsible for compiling, issuing, and reviewing accurate and timely interim and year-end financial reports and note disclosures according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for inclusion in the County's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report. We are looking for an enthusiastic, dependable, dedicated professional with a positive attitude to join our team.

What you’ll do:

  • Prepare account reconciliations and analyze discrepancies.

  • Prepare accounting entries and research transactions using an automated accounting system.

  • Ensure proper accounting methods and policies, accuracy and compliance within the department and the County.

  • Perform ad-hoc projects and other tasks as assigned.

This is an in-office position located in Tucson, AZ, and cannot be remote. The Finance & Risk Management Department is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Essential Functions:

As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.

  • Assists in maintaining general ledger accounts by entering, reviewing, and verifying financial data in County financial systems;

  • Assists in reconciling accounts by compiling supporting documentation, reviewing transactions, and identifying routine discrepancies for correction;

  • Reviews financial documents for accuracy, completeness, and proper coding in accordance with established procedures;

  • Assists in preparing financial schedules, reports, and supporting documentation for audits, financial reporting, and grant-related activities;

  • Compiles, organizes, and summarizes financial data from established sources for use in reporting and analysis;

  • Maintains, updates, and verifies financial records and documentation to ensure accuracy and consistency across systems;

  • Assists in tracking financial transactions related to expenditures and revenues to support reporting and compliance activities;

  • Provides routine support to accounting staff and departmental users, including responding to inquiries and assisting with financial system usage;

  • Communicates with departments to obtain, verify, or clarify financial information as directed;

  • Participates in training and development to build knowledge of governmental accounting principles, County policies, and financial systems.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, economics, business administration, or a closely related field, as defined by the department head at the time of recruitment.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.): 

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in finance or accounting.

  • Licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

  • Minimum one (1) year experience using Microsoft Excel, specifically with pivot tables and formulas.

  • Minimum one (1) year experience performing account reconciliations.

  • Minimum one (1) year experience in preparing financial journal entries.

  • Minimum one (1) year experience in compiling and analyzing financial data.

  • Minimum one (1) year experience in capital asset accounting, including recording, tracking, reconciling, and/or reporting capital assets.

  • Minimum one (1) year experience working within a governmental accounting environment. 

Selection Procedure:

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process. 

Supplemental Information: 

Licenses and Certificates: Some positions require a valid Arizona Class D driver license at the time of application or appointment. Failure to obtain/maintain the required licensure shall be grounds for termination.
 

Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. Some positions may require completion of a satisfactory personal background investigation by the court or law enforcement agencies, due to the need for access to County Attorney and Court facilities, records, and communication systems. Pima County determines whether a position is eligible for visa sponsorship at the time of recruitment. Eligibility is based on the requirements of the position and applicable laws and regulations. Not all positions with Pima County are eligible for visa sponsorship. The Finance & Risk Management Department is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.
