Cornell University · Sur site · Ithaca (Main Campus)

The Opportunity

Under the supervision of the Head of Library Annex, the Access Services Assistant II supports daily library operations by checking materials in and out, retrieving requested items, and shelving library materials.

About The Library Annex

The Library Annex is a state-of-the-art, climate-controlled facility that securely stores and preserves library materials in various formats, including rare and historic print collections. It primarily houses lesser-used materials from Cornell University Library’s campus collections and supports the long-term preservation of Rare and Manuscript Collections. Materials are accessible through document delivery services or an on-site reading room equipped with research resources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Retrieve, pack, receive, unpack, and reshelve library materials for the Google Books project.
  • Follow established protocols to ensure library materials are handled securely and used appropriately, escalating issues or violations as needed.
  • Operate forklifts, order pickers, and other equipment as required, completing the necessary on-site forklift training and proficiency test.
  • Follow OSHA safety regulations when operating equipment and performing assigned duties.
  • Complete all required university compliance training.
  • Participate in special projects and perform other related duties as assigned, which may occasionally fall above or below the position’s current classification.

What We Need

For further consideration, please submit a resume and cover letter.

  • High school diploma and up to two years of customer service experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 70–80 pounds.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability and comfort working at heights.

If you have all those things, great! We have a few more things that we would prefer you to have, but it’s ok if you don’t.

  • Warehouse experience

This is a full-time (39 hours/week), fully on-site position based in Ithaca, NY. Core hours are Monday through Friday. Scheduling may be flexible in collaboration with the supervisor when working within library units, with less flexibility at the Annex, where hours are typically 7:40 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This is a one-year term appointment ending September 30, 2027, contingent upon available work, funding, and performance. The final schedule will be established in collaboration with the supervisor.
