Job Summary
The Transportation Consultant is responsible for supporting the data analysis, planning, optimization, and execution of transportation operations across the supply chain. This role focuses on the efficient movement of materials and finished products between distribution centers, warehouses, and end customers while driving improvements in service, cost, and operational performance.
As a transportation subject matter expert, the Transportation Consultant leverages data analysis, transportation systems, and industry best practices to identify cost-saving opportunities, optimize transportation networks, and implement solutions that enhance customer service and operational efficiency. The role partners closely with Operations, Supply Chain, Finance, Customer Service, and third-party logistics (3PL) providers to support strategic initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.
The Transportation Consultant serves as a point of contact for internal operations teams and transportation providers, ensuring effective communication, issue resolution, and execution of transportation strategies. Success in this role requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills, project management experience, and the ability to influence stakeholders through data-driven recommendations that align with organizational objectives.
Responsibilities
- Transportation Network Data Analytics and Reporting: Conduct comprehensive data analysis of the transportation network to identify opportunities for cost reduction, service improvements, and operational efficiencies, developing and maintaining performance dashboards, scorecards, and executive reports, and leveraging Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and other reporting tools to provide data-driven recommendations for network optimization and strategic execution.
- Operational Improvement Project Management: Lead and manage transportation-related projects from conception to completion, focusing on driving operational efficiencies, cost reductions, and service enhancements. This includes defining project scope, objectives, timelines, and budgets.
- Stakeholder Management: Act as the primary liaison between internal operations teams (e.g., supply chain, warehousing, sales) and external 3PL carriers, fostering strong relationships and ensuring alignment on transportation strategies and execution.
- Data Analysis & KPI Reporting: Develop, monitor, and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess fleet performance, identify trends, and pinpoint areas for improvement. Translate complex data into actionable insights and present findings to leadership.
- Budget & Timeline Management: Effectively manage project budgets and timelines, ensuring projects are delivered on schedule and within financial parameters.
- Process Optimization: Identify opportunities for process standardization and improvement within transportation operations, implementing best practices across the network.
- Problem Solving: Proactively identify and resolve complex transportation challenges, leveraging data and collaborative problem-solving techniques.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration preferred
- Preferred Certifications: PMP, Lean Six Sigma Green/Black Belt
- 4+ years of experience in transportation, logistics, or supply chain management, with a focus on dedicated fleet operations or carrier management preferred
- Proven experience in project management, including managing complex projects, timelines, and budgets.
- Exceptional analytical skills with a strong ability to work with large datasets, identify trends, and derive actionable insights.
- Proficiency with data visualization and business intelligence tools such as Tableau, Alteryx, and Power BI is highly beneficial.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with all levels of an organization and external partners.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong problem-solving capabilities and a proactive approach to identifying and addressing operational challenges.
- Travel Expectations: 10-15%
