Stormont Vail Surgical Technology Apprenticeship Program

Surgical Technologists work alongside surgeons, nurses, and other members of the health care team during surgical operations. At Stormont Vail Health, Surgical Technologists work in operating rooms in the hospital and outpatient surgical centers.  They typically work full-time, which may include nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call work. They are responsible for preparing for, assisting with, and cleaning up after surgical operations. An important part of their role is maintaining a sterile and functional surgical environment. A Surgical Technologist needs to be able to stand for long periods of time, remain alert and observant, work well under pressure, communicate clearly, and pay attention to detail. 


Stormont Vail Apprenticeship Details:

This apprenticeship provides paid training and employment from Day 1. This year-long program includes classroom training, laboratory and simulation, as well as hands-on clinical experiences, as well as structured mentorship from experienced Surgical Technologists. 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • High school diploma
  • Willingness to sign a work commitment for 18 months after program completion

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience in healthcare field
  • Completion of an Anatomy & Physiology course within the last 5 years


Process Timeframe:

  • Applications open 10/2/2026
  • Applications close 11/13/2026
  • Selection Committee will screen applicants and interview top candidates in December 2026
  • Selected Apprentices will be notified on or before December 31, 2026
  • External Apprentices will start New Employee Orientation on February 15, 2027
  • Internal and External Apprentices will start the Surgical Technology Program on March 1, 2027
  • March-May 2027 hours are Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm
  • June-November 2027 hours are Monday-Friday 6:30am-3:00pm
  • Starting in December 2027, Apprenticeship Program graduates will begin Department Preceptorship in the OR and days/hours will vary based on department needs.

A Brief Overview
The Surgical Technologist Resident is a learning, mentored member of the surgical team that works in collaboration with Educators and OR staff to obtain the knowledge base and skill set required to assist in surgical procedures, to facilitate the function of the operating room and the flow of surgical cases. The Surgical Technologist Resident functions within their level of expertise under the immediate direction of an Educator, Surgical Technologist, and/or Registered Nurse. Through a focused curriculum of didactic coursework, lab simulation, and clinical training, the Resident will work toward the goal of an understanding of the fundamental steps of the procedure being performed, the resources necessary to perform the procedure, and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. The Resident will obtain the knowledge and ability to maintain the sterile field during the procedure and participates in ensuring safe, high quality patient care.

What you will do

  • Understands the course curriculum and performance expectations for successful completion of the Residency.
  • Is responsible for learning core content, which includes but is not limited to didactic course work, lab simulation, and clinical training and arrives prepared for all examinations and evaluations throughout the Residency program.
  • Strives to achieve knowledge of and competence in the Surgical Technologist scope of practice.
  • Recognizes their limitations and functions only within the duties they have been deemed competent to perform.
  • Fosters positive relationships with all team members and healthcare customers.
  • Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique and promptly reports any compromise.
  • Performs surgical scrubs, gowning, and gloving appropriately.
  • Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, and equipment prior to patient entry.
  • Helps in draping the sterile field.
  • Mixes and labels all medications under the supervision of the RN Circulator.
  • Hands instruments to the surgeon, holds retractors, cuts suture, and performs tasks as directed.
  • Performs appropriate counts with RN Circulator prior to the operation and before the incision is closed.
  • Attends to proper care and handling of specimens while they are on the sterile field.
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for transportation to decontamination.
  • Assists in cleaning of the OR suite and preparation for the next patient.
