Purpose

Student Associates serve as the front-line representatives for the Student Support team within Texas Student Experience. This team includes Student Outreach and Support (SOS), Horns Helping Horns (HHH), UT Outpost, Legal Services for Students (LSS), and Off-Campus Living Resources.

Student Associates provide exceptional customer service to students, families, faculty, staff, and community members while helping connect students with university resources. They assist with office operations, respond to phone calls and questions, maintain confidentiality, and connect students who may be experiencing personal, academic, financial, legal, housing, or other challenges to support structures.

Because Student Associates may be among the first university representatives to interact with students experiencing significant personal, financial, academic, or mental health concerns, successful candidates must demonstrate maturity, professionalism, discretion, and the ability to remain calm and supportive during difficult conversations. Student Associates receive extensive training and are not expected to provide counseling or case management; however, they play an important role in gathering information, connecting students with resources, and ensuring urgent concerns are promptly routed to professional staff members for follow-up.

All training necessary will be provided.

  • Perform administrative duties such as filing, scanning, data entry, and record management.

  • Assist with outreach events and student engagement initiatives for the units within Student Support as needed.

  • Complete required training related to confidentiality, crisis response, customer service, mandatory reporting, FERPA training, and campus resources.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Current UT Austin student enrolled and in good academic standing.

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive information while demonstrating maturity, professionalism, and discretion.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and follow established procedures for escalating student concerns.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Customer service, front desk, peer support, student leadership, or office experience.

  • Familiarity with UT Austin resources and student support services.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive conversations with professionalism and empathy.

  • Experience in helping professions, student organizations, orientation programs, residential communities, or peer leadership roles.

  • Ability to respond professionally and appropriately to sensitive and occasionally urgent situations.

Work Shift
