The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Oversees the performance and operation of all UR Medicine facilities and personnel as it relates to the safe receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration and disposal of hazardous drugs (HazD) in compliance with USP <800> standards, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' Conditions of Participation, Department of Health regulations, Joint Commission standards, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations. Ensures all required training is delivered and documented by the appropriate individuals for all personnel involved in the handling of hazardous drugs. Ensures necessary policies and standard operations procedures are in place and managed to meet the aforementioned standards and regulations, policies and standard operations procedures are harmonized to the greatest extent possible across UR Medicine facilities, all certifications and licensures are maintained in a current state, and all sites remain in a ready for audit/inspection state. Serves as the chair for the Hazardous Drug Steering Committee.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ensures competency of personnel involved in handling of HazDs, including overseeing training standards, training documentation, maintenance of competencies, and maintenance of adequate records to meet relevant standards and regulations. Ensures standards of training and competency are met for personnel who handle or are potentially exposed to HazDs. Ensures all personnel involved in handling HazDs are current with any required certifications, licensures or registrations.
  • Develops and implements proper policies and standard operations procedures for handling of HazD, which cover receipt, internal transport, transport between sites, storage, preparation, dispensing, administering, spill management and disposal. Reviews and updates all policies and standard operations procedures at least annually. Ensures routine inspections and drills relative to HazD handling, including periodic spill management drills, are conducted as defined by policy. Remains current on relevant standards and regulations related to HazD handling and updates policy, SOPs and competencies as needed.
  • Monitors all UR Medicine facilities that handle HazDs, including all relevant environmental controls. Maintains reports of sampling/testing performed at each facility and quickly identifies any deviation from standards or regulations. Oversees corrective action plan development, completion, and documentation to address and correct any deviations of facility or personnel performance from applicable standards. Ensures all facilities remain compliant with certification, licensure and registration requirements.
  • Ensures the development and implementation of a quality assurance and control program that collects and reports relevant data for adherence to policy and procedures, identification and resolution of quality problems, receipt and evaluation of complaints and potential adverse events reports, and any investigations and corrective action plans as it relates to HazD handling and utilization within the health system. Documents the review of the quality assurance program and findings on at least annually in the form of a report to the HazD Oversight Committee.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Pharmacy, Biomedical Sciences or other related field and 3 years of experience with the handling of hazardous materials or drugs, industrial hygiene, or safety required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5 years of experience in health system or university environment preferred
  • Experience implementing risk prevention and risk control strategies to promote worker safety and environmental protection preferred


LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Certification or Credentials in a relative field – BPS Board certification in sterile compounding, PTCB certification in sterile compounding, OSHA Certification (General Industry, or Safety & Health Fundamentals), or other relevant credential preferred
