The Northrop Grumman Military Internship Program (NG-MIP) is an approved SkillBridge Program under Dept. of Defense Instruction 1322.29 . NG-MIP is an opportunity for transitioning service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through an individual internship during their last 6 months of service, for up to 180 days. The Northrop Grumman Military Internship Program is open to all ranks and experience levels. SkillBridge participants are not eligible for compensation from Northrop Grumman, as they continue to receive military compensation and benefits as active-duty service members.
Responsibilities for this internship position are:
Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC) has developed the Northrop Grumman – Military Internship Program (SKillbridge) utilizing the DoDI guidance for Skillbridge. During this program the service member will be on-site at his or her host company performing an individual internship in an entry to mid-level career type role. The service member will be on the job training supporting a work schedule equivalent to 40hrs per week. Outlined below are the Goals, Objectives, and Outcomes for the program.
Goals – Provide transitioning service members fellowship-style job skills training during the last portion(s) of their military commitment. This program is specifically designed to offer internships that result in the potential to transition to a full-time opportunity as the conclusion of the training. Interns will serve as a pipeline for high-speed, motivated military candidates into NGC.
Objectives - Service Members who complete the Intern program will be highly trained, capable, future employees that align to the specific needs of the organization and are prepared to meet the NG mission “Defining Possible” on Day 1. This program provides a comprehensive internship experience including professional development, networking with leadership, and training specifically focused on NG leadership principles, company history, customer/stakeholder engagement, product and service overview, and core job responsibilities.
Outcome – Offer transitioning service member a rewarding opportunity to join the Northrop Grumman team.
DoD SkillBridge Eligibility:
· Has served at least 180 days on active duty
· Is within 12 months of separation or retirement
· Will receive an honorable discharge
· Has taken any service TAPS/TGPS
· Has attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months
· Received Unit Commander (first O-4/Field Grade commander in chain of command) written authorization and approval to participate in DoD SkillBridge Program prior to start of internship.
Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems is seeking an Engineering Technician to join our team in Chandler, AZ. This position is 100% onsite and does not accommodate telecommuting. The selected candidate will work a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off.
The Engineering Technician supports the Calibration Laboratory by performing hands-on work with electronic, dimensional, mechanical, and electromechanical test equipment. This role focuses on executing calibration procedures, building and troubleshooting test setups, collecting and analyzing data, and supporting engineering in the development and improvement of calibration methods and software‑driven procedures. The technician will assist with programming and maintaining automated calibration procedures in calibration management software, helping improve efficiency, repeatability, and data integrity across the lab. The technician will also work primarily in a lab environment, with occasional support to field activities, and will help ensure traceability to NIST standards and compliance with ISO 17025 requirements.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Complete all assigned training and work under the guidance of a mentor until satisfactory proficiency is demonstrated.
- Set up and operate calibration standards and test equipment (e.g., multifunction calibrators, oscilloscopes, DMMs, pressure controllers, torque standards, dimensional gages) per documented procedures and engineering direction.
- Execute calibration and functional test procedures, record as-found/as-left data, and document any abnormalities in accordance with lab processes and quality requirements.
- Use calibration management software to open, execute, and document calibration procedures, including entering results, attaching records, and ensuring proper configuration control of procedures.
- Assist engineering in developing, modifying, and validating automated or semi‑automated calibration procedures within calibration software.
- Assist engineering in method development, uncertainty evaluations, and Gage R&R, including basic data reduction and plotting in Excel or similar tools.
- Support troubleshooting of equipment and setups, including basic fault isolation and repair coordination under engineering supervision.
- Maintain good lab organization, including inventory of standards, working instruments, cables, and fixtures; verify that all equipment is within calibration and properly labeled.
- Support both laboratory and field activities as required; travel may be required to support off-site or on-site customer equipment.
- Safely handle and transport test equipment and hardware; must be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs repeatedly.
- Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
- High school diploma or recognized equivalent, and 2 years of additional education and/or related experience (such as calibration, metrology, electronics, mechanical, or test technician work).
- Hands-on experience with test and measurement equipment and/or electronic or mechanical assemblies (school, military, or industry experience).
- Familiarity with computer‑based test or calibration tools, data entry in technical software, or other software‑driven test environments (e.g., Fluke Met/Cal).
- Ability to read and work from procedures, schematics, engineering drawings, and work instructions.
- Proficiency with standard office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and basic familiarity with shared repositories (e.g., SharePoint, Confluence, or similar systems).
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to follow documented processes and manage multiple concurrent tasks.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills; comfortable interacting with engineers, analysts, technicians, quality, and program personnel in structured technical settings.
- Must be capable of lifting 50 lbs through a wide range of motions.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance per company and business needs. U.S. citizenship is a prerequisite.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completion of a technical trade school, community college program, or military technical school in electronics, mechanical, metrology, or a related discipline.
- Experience working in a calibration laboratory, metrology lab, engineering lab, or test environment.
- Familiarity with the application of measurement theory (accuracy, uncertainty, linearity, repeatability) and how it applies to calibration and test.
- Hands-on knowledge/experience in one or more of the following disciplines: electrical, dimensional, thermodynamic, mass, force, pressure, or torque measurements.
- Experience using or configuring calibration management software or automated calibration platforms (e.g., creating/modifying procedures, limits, or data‑capture routines).
- Experience with ISO 17025, AS9100, or similar quality/technical standards.
- Experience using data-analysis tools (e.g., Excel, basic statistics, trend charts) to review calibration or test results.
- Active U.S. Government Secret security clearance.
