The Reinsurance and Business Accounting teams operate within the International Finance function. We are focused on minimising aged debt and maximising Markel’s multi-billion-dollar reinsurance asset. Our work ensures the business extracts full value from its reinsurance spend, whilst providing balance sheet certainty and generating strong cash flow.

We are a collaborative, delivery-focused team who utilise a modern technology estate which includes Eclipse, the Phinsys platform, Databricks tools, and Ataccama solutions. We are invested in automation, data quality and reporting capability, aspiring to use digital tools to streamline daily tasks.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Take ownership for assigned programmes of reinsurance and own processes end to end. Keep stakeholders and leadership informed without prompting.
  • Create reinsurance risks in core systems, ensuring policy terms and system functionality drivers are accurately recorded and maintained.
  • Ensure all reinsurance premiums, commissions and expenses are correctly calculated, booked, advised and settled under Contractual Terms.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate calculation and issuance of reinsurance recoveries in respect of paid claims and outstanding reserves, responding to all reinsurer queries in line with key performance indicators. Accurately record all reinsurance recoveries in core systems.
  • Develop strong relationships with key internal and external parties, to expedite the receipt of reinsurance funds and reduce dispute risk.
  • Support the Actuarial and Finance teams in relation to reserving and financial reporting. Address questions promptly and provide valuable insights and data analytics.
  • Lead and challenge on process improvement, ensuring accuracy and automation, inspiring change within the team and with upstream collaborators.
  • Satisfy all internal and external reporting requirements, in accordance with imposed deadlines.
  • Flag material issues on a timely basis and monitor through to resolution.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the reinsurance process and internal controls which are in place to support it, including, but not limited to Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX). Ensure all controls are followed.

Our must-haves:

  • Previous experience in the insurance industry and possess a strong demonstrable knowledge of how to facilitate all aspects of reinsurance post-placement.
  • Bring energy, drive and a consistently constructive approach, engaging positively with change and contributing openly to new ideas.
  • Demonstrate the ability to interpret and analyse reinsurance contract language, in order to correctly assess the applicability of cover. A basic understanding of accounting principles and practices would be beneficial.
  • Be delivery oriented, motivated to succeed and energised to intentionally drive their own personal development. A capacity to learn is imperative and initiative is highly valued.
  • Work autonomously and be capable of prioritising their own workload, anticipating what needs to be done ahead of being asked and taking ownership for outcomes.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills, with proven examples of meeting customer needs.
  • Display well-developed interpersonal skills at all business levels, including with external business parties.
  • Possess strong numerical and analytical skills, with demonstrable examples of how these have been effectively utilised to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Be versatile and able to demonstrate experience handling large volumes of work, with changing priorities and tight timeframes. Deliver reliably through peak reporting cycles, system change and challenging deadlines.
  • Exhibit strong Excel skills and be a proficient user of the MS Office suite; experience using Eclipse and Oracle would be advantageous and ability to learn in-house software is important.
