Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Database Engineer with expertise in MongoDB, AWS cloud services, and Terraform to support and manage our cloud-hosted database platforms. The successful candidate will be responsible for the administration, maintenance, optimization, and automation of MongoDB environments running in AWS, while also providing broader database support and SQL query expertise.

This is a 12 month fixed term opportunity!

What are they key day to day tasks the person in this role will complete?

• Administer, maintain, monitor, and optimize MongoDB database environments hosted in AWS. 

• Design, deploy, and manage cloud infrastructure using Terraform and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles. 

• Support database performance tuning, capacity planning, backup and recovery, and high availability configurations. 

• Implement and maintain database security, access controls, and compliance requirements. 

• Troubleshoot and resolve database, infrastructure, and application performance issues. 

• Collaborate with development, platform, and infrastructure teams to support application deployments and operational requirements. 

• Develop and maintain automation scripts and deployment pipelines for database infrastructure. 

• Create and maintain technical documentation, operational procedures, and support guides. 

• Support data analysis and reporting requirements through SQL query development and optimization. 

• Participate in incident management, change implementation, and continuous improvement activities. 

What attributes will this person have in order to be successful?

• Strong experience administering MongoDB databases in production environments. 

• Proven experience working with AWS services, including infrastructure, networking, security, and cloud operations. 

• Hands-on experience with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code practices. 

• Strong understanding of database concepts including performance tuning, backup and recovery, replication, and monitoring. 

• Solid SQL querying skills and experience working with relational databases. 

• Experience troubleshooting complex database and cloud infrastructure issues. 

• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, automation, and DevOps practices. 

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. 

The ideal candidate combines database administration expertise with cloud engineering capabilities, has a strong automation mindset, and can effectively manage MongoDB platforms within AWS while supporting broader database and data management requirements.
