Job Description:

The Security Officer - Complex provides a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, employees, and volunteers. This position is typically located at acute care sites in metropolitan areas, which see a high volume of emergency department patients, typically with behavioral health units where the complexity of duties and scope of responsibilities and / or the likelihood of de-escalation are inherent. This role demands a high skill set in safety and security, with in-depth knowledge of de-escalation techniques, incident reporting, and investigation. The ability to work independently, anticipate interventions, and master de-escalation tactics is crucial for this role. The Security Officer – Complex must be vigilant, anticipating potential threats and mitigating risks through constant surveillance, ensuring the protection of the facility and its occupants. This work demands professionalism, precision, and an unwavering commitment to safety in an intense and dynamic environment.

Essential Functions

• Independent Work: Exemplifies the importance of independence, vigilance, and professionalism in ensuring the safety and security of the healthcare facility and its occupants.
• Training on Workplace Violence Prevention (WPVP): Security officers teach WPVP techniques, focusing on education, prevention, and mitigation of workplace violence. This includes handling verbal harassment, physical assault, and bomb threats.
• Planning and participation in Drills: Engages in exercises like infant abduction and active shooter scenarios to prepare staff for real-life situations.
• Mentors and trains new officers to the security standards and Intermountain Health’s mission, vision and values. 
• Oversees and documents Safety Inspections: Documents inspections of walking surfaces, exit signs, fire extinguishers, fire drills, and overall facility safety to mitigate risks.
• Independently performs routine rounds within the facility and its exterior, including parking areas. This role requires a proactive approach to security and safety, especially in high-risk environments such as emergency departments and behavioral health units.
• Anticipating Interventions: Identifies potential security threats and takes preemptive measures to mitigate risks before they escalate, ensuring the protection of the facility and its occupants.
• De-escalation Expertise: Utilizes advanced verbal and non-verbal strategies to calm individuals, resolve conflicts peacefully, and minimize the need for physical force.
• Customer Assistance: Provides directions and information to patients, visitors, employees, and volunteers while in the facility or on rounds.
• Incident Investigation and Reporting: Investigates incidents thoroughly and writes detailed reports.
• Training and Professional Standards: Participates in mandatory training and certifications at hire, weekly, and annually. Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and professional standards. Provides excellent service to all customers of Intermountain Health.
• Security Technology Management: May operate and monitor security technology systems, including surveillance cameras, access control systems, and alarm systems. Ensures proper functioning and maintenance of security equipment.
• Dealing with Violent Patients: Intervenes to protect the safety of everyone involved when patients act aggressively or violently, including using physical restraints when necessary.
• Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring compliance with regulations such as HIPAA when reporting crimes or incidents, disclosing only the minimum necessary information to law enforcement.
• Bomb Threat/Suspicious Package Responses: Trained to respond to bomb threats and suspicious packages, following protocols to ensure the safety of the facility.
• Conducting Searches: Performs respectful and safe searches of patients and searching for narcotics, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
• Investigations: Collaborates with HR and law enforcement to conduct investigations, follows protocols for disclosing patient information, and ensures facility safety.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License.
• Current Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers or willing to obtain within 90 days of hire.
• Demonstrated previous experience in law enforcement, corrections, public safety, military police, or security experience.
• Strong interpersonal skills, especially in de-escalating strong emotional situations.
• Effective communication skills both verbally and in writing.
• At least 21 years of age. 
• IAHSS Advanced Security Officer Certification

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience working in a hospital /acute care setting.

Physical Requirements

• Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs.
• Frequent interactions with customers require employees to communicate as well as understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.
• Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy.
• Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transport, pull, and push equipment. Will also work on hands and knees and bend to set-up, troubleshoot, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
• For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience. 

$22.24 - $32.70
