The role requires a high level of energy and versatility, as the TA will move between diverse subject areas—including Science, Sociology, Technology, Trades, Engineering, Art, Acting, Allied Health, History, Humanities, Math, and Medicine—to help students bridge academic gaps and explore career pathways.

Duties & Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Instructional Assistance; Project Oversight

  • Project Facilitation: Actively assist Lead Teachers in delivering STEAHM (Science and Sociology, Technology and Trades, Engineering, Art and Allied Health, Humanities, Math and Medicine)-based lessons; help students execute complex projects such as engineering builds, artistic creations, or scientific experiments.
  • Small Group Leadership: Lead breakout groups of K-12 students to ensure they understand project steps and safety protocols.
  • Lab & Shop Safety: Provide vigilant oversight during hands-on activities, ensuring all students follow safety guidelines.
  • Experiment Support: Set up, tear down, and maintain materials for daily experiments and activities across the STEAHM spectrum.

Mentorship and Student Engagement

  • Differentiated Support: Identify students struggling with specific concepts (e.g., Math or History) and provide one-on-one, in-the-moment tutoring/mentoring to keep them on track with the group project. Coordinate annual open enrollment, including system configuration and employee communication.
  • Engagement: Encourage student curiosity and participation; serve as a positive role model for younger students exploring higher education environments.

Administrative and Operations

  • Reporting: Assist the Lead Teacher in tracking student attendance and participation; provide feedback to the Program Director on project efficacy.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

BROAD STEAM COMPETENCY

  • Interdisciplinary Knowledge: General aptitude or interest in the STEAHM pillars.
  • Technical Literacy: Ability to use basic hand tools (Trades), scientific lab equipment  (Medicine/Science), and digital software (Technology/Math).
  • Pedagogical Skill: Ability to simplify complex concepts for K-12 age groups (Elementary through High School).

  • Setting: Work occurs in various environments, including standard classrooms, computer labs, communal garden, vocational trades shops, and outdoor field sites.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSES

  • Requirement: Strong academic record in at least two STEAHM-related fields.

  • Clearance: Must successfully pass Luna Community College’s Background Clearance process, specifically for working with minors.
