In addition, it delivers mid- to long-term strategic support for rotating equipment across Scotford’s production assets, including the Upgrader, Refinery, and Chemicals units—and contributes to shaping both capital and operational spending decisions at the site.

Furthermore, the position acts as the gatekeeper for rotating discipline funding requests through the SEAM process and is responsible for prioritizing departmental work and allocating resources to meet engineering requirements. It leads a team of 9–14 engineers and contractors, manages the annual OPEX budget, and provides technical guidance to support capital investment decisions. The role requires balancing limited resources against competing priorities, ensuring reliability improvements while supporting business growth and addressing performance gaps. It also involves coordinating with internal and external stakeholders to align technical direction, demonstrating strong interpersonal and technical skills, and serving as a member of the site’s Incident Command team.

What you’ll be doing

Key Accountabilities:

  • Support deployed personnel as needed in their efforts to provide both medium- and long-term engineering support to the Production Teams for rotating equipment.

  • Strive for continuous improvement of existing processes (MOC, MTO, Sphera, FSR, etc.) to achieve agreed upon reliability and availability targets for rotating equipment.

  • Set direction for and lead Rotating Equipment discipline engineering team.

  • In partnership with the Competitive scoping team manager, support development of competitive and effective rotating equipment scope for Turnaround events.

  • Ensure IMS is the tool used to capture engineering equipment history, data, for rotating equipment.

  • Demand management for all rotating scope and work items, in partnership with the PET leadership team.

  • Manage the team budget and provide monthly projection updates to the PET Manager.

  • Perform health-checks and work process effectiveness reviews. The results of the reviews are discussed with the MAC/EI Process Focal Point and the MAC Process Owner.

  • Collaborate with other Department Managers to resolve issues related to work process integration, cross department interfaces, and timelines.

What you bring

  • BS, MS, or PhD in mechanical or related engineering degree with a focus on rotating equipment.

  • Registration or eligible for registration with Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (P. Eng or P.L. Eng).
