About the Traverso Lab

The Traverso lab (Lab 4 Translational Engineering – L4TE) is focused on translational medicine. Our main goal is to help people through the use of medicine and engineering. Research projects involve medical devices that can range from diagnostic, drug delivery, surgical, and implantable devices.

This position will require direct on-boarding and will be stationed at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston but will involve work with a multidisciplinary team from across the different MIT/Harvard/BWH institutions.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly motivated Mechatronics/Mechanical/Biomedical Research Engineer to oversee and continuously develop the laboratory's engineering fabrication and prototyping space while supporting the development of next-generation biomedical technologies.

The primary responsibility of this role is to manage the engineering fabrication laboratory, maintain and expand its capabilities, support researchers with prototype development and fabrication, establish best engineering practices, and ensure safe and efficient operation of shared equipment.

In addition, this engineer will contribute to the development of custom research instrumentation, automated experimental platforms, and advanced engineering systems that support new translational research initiatives. As our laboratory expands into high-throughput engineering, automation, and scalable research platforms, the successful candidate will play an important role in integrating mechanical, electrical, and software systems into innovative biomedical research tools.

Responsibilities:

Engineering Fabrication Laboratory

  • Manage and maintain the laboratory engineering fabrication space.
  • Train laboratory personnel on fabrication equipment and best practices.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance, calibration, and laboratory organization.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures.
  • Support researchers with fabrication, machining, and prototype development.
  • Identify and implement new equipment and capabilities that strengthen the laboratory's engineering infrastructure.

Engineering & Research Support

  • Design and develop novel medical devices and drug delivery systems.
  • Design, fabricate, assemble, and evaluate engineering prototypes.
  • Develop custom fixtures, experimental hardware, and engineering tools.
  • Support the design of automated research platforms and high-throughput experimental systems.
  • Integrate mechanical, electrical, sensing, and software components into custom laboratory equipment.
  • Perform mechanical and materials characterization.
  • Analyze and summarize experimental data.
  • Document engineering designs and experimental procedures.
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering and scientific teams throughout the device development process.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate enjoys building engineering systems from concept to implementation. They are equally comfortable machining components, assembling prototypes, integrating sensors and electronics, programming simple control systems, developing custom laboratory equipment, and supporting multidisciplinary research teams.

They possess excellent organizational, communication, and documentation skills, are eager to learn new technologies, and enjoy solving practical engineering challenges in a collaborative research environment.

What This Position Offers

This position provides the opportunity to build and manage a state-of-the-art engineering fabrication laboratory while contributing directly to the development of innovative medical technologies. Beyond supporting existing research programs, the engineer will help establish new laboratory capabilities in advanced manufacturing, mechatronics, laboratory automation, and custom research instrumentation that will enable future translational research initiatives.
