Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) supports the effective and timely development and operation of national security systems through scientific research and the application of advanced technologies. PSL has more than 150 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The expertise of the laboratories’ technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems. 

The Materials Science Department within the Space Materials Laboratory is seeking a well-qualified individual for the role of Research Associate – Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE). In this hands-on laboratory role, you will independently execute advanced Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI) techniques on mission-critical launch vehicle and spacecraft components, supporting senior technical staff in technique development and validation. You will contribute to mission assurance through hands-on inspections, data collection and analysis, and oversight of laboratory NDI systems and operations. This role involves supporting programs for USSF, NRO, and commercial space agencies while applying and expanding your expertise in state-of-the-art NDI methods and materials characterization.

This position may be filled at the Research Associate II or Research Associate III depending on the selected candidate's qualifications and experience.

The selected candidate will be required to work full-time, on-site at our facility in El Segundo, CA.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Perform non-destructive inspections on mission-critical launch vehicle and spacecraft components using ultrasonic testing, eddy current, acoustic microscopy, thermography, and other advanced inspection techniques
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot NDI instrumentation including ultrasonic systems, eddy current equipment, acoustic microscopes, thermography systems, and associated test and measurement electronics
  • Collect, analyze, and document inspection data to support applied research activities in materials characterization and NDI science
  • Contribute to mission assurance by conducting inspections, analyzing measurement data, and preparing technical reports for USSF, NRO, and commercial space programs
  • Lead laboratory operations activities including organization, equipment calibration coordination, inventory management, and compliance with quality standards in collaboration with internal EHS and metrology teams
  • Collaborate with senior technical staff and cross-functional teams to support field evaluations, failure investigations, and technical assessments
  • Work independently after onboarding to execute inspection programs and maintain operational readiness of NDI capabilities

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements for Research Associate II:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university program in Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline
  • 1+ years of professional experience performing non-destructive inspections in aerospace, defense, manufacturing, or research laboratory environments
  • Demonstrated proficiency in performing and interpreting results from multiple NDI techniques, including but not limited to: ultrasonic testing (UT), eddy current testing (ET), radiographic testing (RT), infrared thermography (IRT), acoustic microscopy, and/or visual inspection methods
  • Strong technical background in materials science, physics, or engineering including knowledge of structural materials and the physical principles underlying non-destructive inspection techniques
  • Proven ability to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate analytical instrumentation independently
  • Experience with proper handling, documentation, and test result recording for materials and specimens
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision after initial onboarding and training on laboratory-specific procedures
  • Willingness to travel occasionally and work outside normal business hours to support program needs (approximately 10-20% travel or as required)
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance

In addition to the above, the minimum requirements for Research Associate III include:

  • Demonstrated technical depth in materials testing, instrumentation, or NDI methods through graduate research or professional experience
  • Experience coordinating laboratory operations, maintenance activities, or compliance programs

How You Can Stand Out

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these: 

  • Master's degree from an accredited college/university program in Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline
  • NDT/NDI Level II or Level III certification in one or more methods (UT, ET, PT, MT, RT, IRT) through ASNT, employer-based programs, or equivalent certification bodies
  • Experience leading or coordinating laboratory operations, equipment maintenance programs, or calibration management systems
  • Measurement and signal processing skills using various programming languages, i.e., Python, MATLAB, C++, LabVIEW, etc.
  • Experience with data acquisition systems, instrumentation control, and automated testing platforms
  • Experience designing and fabricating custom NDI fixtures and automation systems, including CAD/machine drawings, motion control hardware (encoders, actuators), and additive manufacturing (3D printing)
  • Demonstrated use of machine learning or advanced data analysis approaches to NDI signal processing
  • Experience working with EHS, quality assurance, or metrology organizations in laboratory or manufacturing environments
  • Experience with aerospace or defense NDI applications including composites, adhesive bonds, or advanced material systems
  • Experience with the Intelligence Community
  • A current and active Secret or higher security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government
