Please note that the salary range listed reflects full-time hours. The final salary will be adjusted based on the part-time hours for this position. This position is 17.5 hours a week.

Job Description:

Primary Purpose

Campus Wellness provides physical, emotional, and mental health services for the students at the University of Waterloo, their eligible dependents, and serves as an emergency resource for staff, faculty, and campus visitors. Our professionals provide primary medical care and mental health services using an inclusive, connected, and collaborative approach.

Registered Nurses (RNs) are integral members of a multi-disciplinary team focused on supporting the delivery of primary health care and participating in health initiatives related to Campus Wellness. Their responsibilities include clinical nursing, health education, outreach initiatives, counselling, supporting system navigation, and crisis intervention’s also offer emergency care and ongoing medical support for staff and faculty of the university community. RNs operate in consultation or with support from another Health Care Professionals.

Key Accountabilities

Quality Care Delivery

  • The RN will deliver efficient and competent nursing care in accordance with the standards established by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the Regulated Health Professions Act.

  • Maintains strict adherence to all confidentiality and privacy standards of nursing practice.

  • Accurately assess and provide care to a diverse range of clients, including infants, young children, and families.

  • Communicates physical and mental health concerns to the appropriate personnel and documents information comprehensively, including observations, assessments, management plans, and interventions.

  • Perform mental health crisis triage assessments

  • Be comfortable and perform Mental Health Crisis Intervention, Family Planning, Well-baby assessments, Immunization Clinics and provide Health Education to the UW community

  • Obtain, clarify and implement providers orders accurately insuring the best possible health outcome for the patient.

Priority Setting

  • Independently identifies client changes in patient acuity levels by applying clinical knowledge and critical thinking to effectively triage and prioritize care.

Adaptability & Accountability

  • Provides autonomous care in situations where a client’s condition is complex, and the outcomes of care are not predictable.

  • The RN will work across a variety of assignments within the clinical area

  • Maintains efficient client flow through Health Services, the RN will rotate through roles including Immunizations, the Dispensary, Resource Nurse, and as an Assessment nurse in both Student Health and the Family Health Clinic.

  • The RN is required to engage in continuous education to stay current with evolving practices and maintain proficiency in an ever-changing healthcare environment. The RN must demonstrate a willingness to complete relevant courses and training to uphold competency and meet professional standards.

  • Applies all confidentiality standards of nursing practice.

*All employees of the University are expected to follow University and departmental health and safety policy, procedures and work practices at all times. Employees are also responsible for the completion of all health and safety training, as assigned. Employees with staff supervision and/or management responsibilities will ensure that assigned staff abide by the above, and actively identify, assess and correct health and safety hazards, as required.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of a recognized School of Nursing and be a member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario

  • Preference will be given to candidates with a Bachelor’s degree

  • Candidates must possess current CPR or Basic Cardiac Life Support certification

  • Preference will be given to candidates who have training in conducting mental health risk assessments, safety planning and de-escalating for individuals in distress

  • Preference will be given to candidates who have completed a recognized patient assessment course

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience providing patient care across the age continuum and health care spectrum, addressing a wide range of health issues.

  • Recent experience with preventative health care including immunizations, communicable diseases education and treatments, sexual health, and harm reduction strategies.

  • Experience in public health, emergencies, urgent care, or crisis intervention, family practice is required

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • The RN must have a demonstrated history of good working relationships with colleagues, professional staff, and the inter-professional team,

  • Possess highly developed organizational skills and the ability to set priorities effectively.

  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, function collaboratively within a team and make clinical decisions with their professional scope of practice and in accordance with the University of Waterloo’s policy and procedures.

  • Maintain a clear Police Vulnerable Sector Check
