  • Design, direct, and evaluate complex research studies, surveillance systems, and public health programs; develop innovative approaches for collecting, analyzing, and applying oral health and population health data to address critical public health priorities
  • Serve as a senior advisor and liaison to CDC Centers, other federal agencies, state and local health departments, academic institutions, professional organizations, and external partners to advance oral health objectives and scientific collaboration.
  • Provide technical consultation for grants, cooperative agreements, and other federally funded public health activities, including protocol development, research review, study implementation, and program performance assessment.
  • Lead development of scientific publications, technical reports, executive briefings, presentations, and policy recommendations; communicate complex research findings to scientific, professional, governmental, and public audiences.
  • Enhance scientific rigor, regulatory compliance, and adherence to federal research requirements, including Institutional Review Board (IRB), Office of Management and Budget (OMB), data quality, and scientific integrity standards.
  • Provide thought leadership in oral health surveillance, dental public health, disease prevention, and population health while fostering collaboration across multidisciplinary teams and public health stakeholders.

What You Will Need:

  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from an accredited institution.
  • Current, unrestricted professional dental license in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Master of Public Health (MPH), Doctor of Public Health (DrPH), PhD in a relevant public health discipline, or a closely related advanced degree.
  • Current Diplomate status with the American Board of Dental Public Health, or an equivalent current specialty credential in dental public health.
  • At least six years of relevant professional experience in dental public health, oral-health epidemiology, surveillance, public health research, health services research, scientific program leadership, or a directly related field.
  • Substantial documented experience working within or directly supporting CDC, another HHS operating division, or a comparable federal public health entity.
  • Demonstrated leadership of complex oral-health surveillance, epidemiologic research, or population-health measurement activities.
  • Experience providing scientific direction for public health research, surveillance, health services research, program evaluation, protocol development, guideline review, and policy analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience advising senior federal public health officials or comparable executive scientific leaders.
  • Experience establishing and directing collaborations across federal programs, state and local health departments, academic institutions, professional associations, and nongovernmental organizations.
  • Demonstrated record of authoring or coauthoring peer-reviewed scientific publications in oral health, dental public health, epidemiology, surveillance, health services research, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience presenting scientific findings to national professional, scientific, governmental, or public health audiences.
  • Experience reviewing or overseeing IRB-related research protocols and federal information-collection requirements.
  • Experience providing scientific oversight or consultation for grants, cooperative agreements, contracts, or other extramural public health activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate scientific findings into policy, programmatic, clinical, or public health recommendations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a federal Public Trust clearance.

What Would Be Nice To Have:

  • Senior leadership experience within a CDC oral-health, chronic-disease prevention, surveillance, or scientific program.
  • Experience directing an organizational unit or national portfolio responsible for programmatic and scientific oral-health activities.
  • Experience leading a multidisciplinary surveillance, investigations, and research function.
  • Experience directing or providing senior oversight to an accredited or federally sponsored dental public health residency or comparable professional-development program.
  • National leadership experience establishing, monitoring, or evaluating population-level oral-health objectives and indicators.
  • Demonstrated expertise in national oral-health surveillance and the use of population-level data to monitor disease burden, disparities, and progress toward public health objectives.
  • Experience representing an oral-health program on enterprise or cross-agency committees addressing health disparities, health equity, social determinants of health, chronic disease, maternal and child health, or related public health priorities.
  • Recognition by national public health, dental, scientific, or professional organizations for contributions to oral-health research, surveillance, policy, leadership, or practice.
  • Appointment or selection as a senior scholar, fellow, advisor, board member, or comparable expert by a nationally recognized oral-health or public health organization.
  • Experience integrating scientific programs with policy, partnerships, workforce development, and public communication strategies.
