Position Summary
The Project Lead Engineer – Steelworks (BHS Platforms & Walkways) is responsible for leading and coordinating all engineering activities related to the design, optimization, fabrication, installation, and commissioning of steel structures supporting baggage handling systems (BHS), including platforms, walkways, access structures, and associated steelwork components.
The Project Lead Engineer drives the technical execution of projects from concept through customer handover, ensuring compliance with project requirements, applicable standards, schedules, budgets, and safety regulations. Acting as the technical focal point for steelworks, this role serves as the communication bridge between customers, project management, site teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal engineering disciplines to ensure successful project delivery.
Responsibilities & Key Tasks
Project Execution
- Lead the engineering and technical delivery of steelworks packages, including BHS platforms, walkways, support structures, stairways, handrails, and related components.
- Manage projects from detailed design through fabrication, installation, commissioning, and final customer handover.
- Ensure structural designs meet operational, safety, maintenance, and accessibility requirements.
- Oversee the integration of steelworks with baggage handling equipment, electrical systems, controls, architecture, and civil interfaces.
- Support constructability reviews and ensure practical, cost-effective engineering solutions.
- Ensure technical compliance with project specifications, local regulations, airport standards, and applicable international design codes.
Engineering Leadership
- Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams involved in structural, mechanical, electrical, and installation activities.
- Act as the technical authority for all steelworks engineering matters throughout the project lifecycle.
- Review and approve engineering deliverables, calculations, drawings, models, and technical documentation.
- Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and support to engineers, designers, and project team members.
- Drive engineering excellence, standardization, and continuous improvement within the project team.
Project Planning & Coordination
- Develop and maintain engineering execution plans, schedules, and deliverable tracking for steelworks activities.
- Coordinate engineering interfaces with Project Managers, Site Managers, Design Teams, Fabricators, and Subcontractors.
- Monitor engineering progress and proactively identify and mitigate technical risks.
- Collaborate closely with procurement, construction, commissioning, and customer teams to ensure alignment and seamless project execution.
- Support site activities and provide technical resolutions during fabrication and installation phases.
Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare and manage technical specifications, design reports, calculations, engineering procedures, and installation documentation.
- Ensure all engineering records and project documentation are accurately maintained and archived.
- Support preparation of method statements, inspection and test plans (ITPs), risk assessments, and quality documentation.
- Provide regular progress updates, technical status reports, risk assessments, and mitigation plans to Project Management and Engineering Management.
Budget, Quality & Safety
- Monitor engineering budgets, resource utilization, and productivity targets.
- Support project cost control by identifying optimization opportunities and managing scope changes.
- Ensure compliance with company quality standards and project quality requirements.
- Conduct design risk assessments and support health, safety, and environmental (HSE) initiatives throughout the engineering phase.
- Promote a strong safety culture in both design and site execution activities.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 10+ years of total engineering experience in structural, civil, mechanical, industrial, or infrastructure engineering environments.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in steel structures, industrial systems, airport infrastructure, material handling systems, or comparable large-scale projects.
- Demonstrated experience leading engineering activities for complex steelworks projects.
- Strong understanding of structural design principles, steel fabrication processes, and installation methodologies.
- Knowledge of relevant structural design codes, standards, and regulations.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while balancing quality, schedule, cost, scope, and resources.
- Strong communication, coordination, and stakeholder management skills.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and solution-oriented with the ability to perform effectively under pressure.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% or as required by project needs.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineering (PE), Chartered Engineer, or equivalent certification.
- Project Management certification (PMP, PRINCE2, or equivalent).
- Experience with airport baggage handling systems (BHS) and supporting steelwork infrastructure.
- Experience with structural analysis and detailing software such as STAAD, SAP2000, RFEM, Tekla Structures, AutoCAD, or similar.
- Familiarity with BIM workflows and multidisciplinary design coordination.
- Experience managing subcontractors, fabricators, and installation contractors.
- Proven leadership experience managing project teams and mentoring engineering personnel.
- Knowledge of international airport design standards and material handling industry practices.
