The Section of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine has been a model of exemplary patient care, research, and post-doctoral training for more than 20 years. The 35 faculty, clinical associates and research associates along with a staff of more than 72, have devoted themselves to the pursuit of excellence in each of these important activities.


Job Summary

This position supports the Interventional Pulmonary Clinical Program by coordinating diagnostic and therapeutic regimes for patients for 4 to 6 physicians. Coordinates diagnostic and therapeutic regimes for patients. Interacts with patients to explain diagnoses, procedures, and treatments. Conducts routine procedures and collects data. Coordinates physician activities with referring physicians, nursing staff, hospital administration, ancillary services, support services, insurance companies, other departments/sections, and agencies as needed.

Serves as a liaison with patients, families, staff nurses, physicians, and other members of the team and serves as a consultant for patients and staff in the specialty area. Provides complex nursing care to patients and families as part of the discharge process. Assists Interventional Procedures Program with scheduling, coordinating care and performance of airway and pleural interventions for both inpatients and outpatients in operating room.

Responsibilities

  • Handles confidential information consistent with Federal HIPAA legislation.
  • Provides patient care in a compassionate and empathetic manner; demonstrates knowledge of age-specific considerations in the provision of care. Involves a multidisciplinary team as needed to support patient and family psychological, social and spiritual needs.
  • Accurately completes required patient assessment, documentation, and interpretations for each patient encounter. Possesses sound professional judgment for timely physician intervention as needed. Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate actions, initiates appropriate life supporting interventions while communicating appropriately with physicians.
  • Schedules and coordinates care and performance of airway and pleural interventions for both inpatients and outpatients.
  • Sets up operating room for rigid bronchoscopy and pleural interventions.
  • Facilitates the proper set up of bronchoscopy suite for advanced diagnostic and pleural interventions.
  • Assists in outpatient interventional pulmonary clinic by scheduling new patients, procedures, follow-up visits, referrals and transfers to and from outside hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. Assists with the delivery of patient educational materials. Assures that home supply orders are delivered promptly. Oversees interventional pulmonologists procedure schedules to ensure their availability for procedures.
  • Communicates with patients with follow-up calls, documents each post intervention patient, and promptly notifies physicians with any concerns.
  • Coordinates patient care with thoracic surgery, oncology, pathology, radiology, radiation oncology, ENT, and anesthesia.
  • Maintains communication with Director, Interventional Program to ensure that program is on track regarding Section and Department of Medicine goals are met.
  • Maintains nursing equipment and work areas in proper working conditions; reports malfunctioning equipment or housekeeping issues to the appropriate person.
  • Maintains a neat and clean work area with equipment.
  • Maintains adequate inventory control of all necessary supplies. Maintains emergency equipment with adequate availability and good working order, and restocks as needed with fiscal awareness and accountability.
  • Interfaces with customers, specifically patients, families, visitors, and UCMC staff in a professional, positive and accommodating manner; demonstrates knowledge of AIDET principles and employs in all situations; demonstrates flexibility in accommodating special needs of customers whenever possible.
  • May perform all required quality assurance testing as indicated or as required by UCMC.
  • Applies logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Interprets information from caregivers, nurses, or physicians about patient condition, treatment plans, or appropriate activities.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Experience:

  • Background with interventional pulmonary procedures.

Certifications:

  • Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the State of Illinois.
  • Current BLS from the American Heart Association.
  • Current CPR, ACLS, and/or PALS Certifications.
