Northrop Grumman’s Defense Systems sector is currently seeking a Principal (Level 3) Environmental Engineer to join our EHS team and support our growing business at our Elk River, MN location.  The site is a dynamic defense development facility that processes, assembles and tests military ammunition and munitions.  Our Elk River location consists of a 3,200 acre facility with over 30 active buildings.  This role supports 1st shift operations on a 4/10 schedule.

 

Ability to travel to provide support and collaboration efforts at other NG facilities and attend training required for the role, <15% of the time. 

 

Position Description:

The Principal Environmental Engineer’s focus will be to leverage ISO14001 Environmental Management System practices to drive environmental protection, risk reduction, compliance and sustainability efforts for a complex facility.  They will also facilitate both internal and external regulatory compliance assurance inspections onsite.   

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

• Monitor, review and analyze regulations issued by the county, MN Pollution Control Agency and Federal EPA to determine potential impacts to operations and establish solutions to maintain compliance
• Prepare environmental emissions calculations, reporting, permitting, sampling and monitoring necessary to maintain compliance and internal company tracking is kept up to date.      
• Collaborate across functional departments and personnel onsite to develop and implement effective environmental controls to prevent releasees, drive improvements or adapt to site changes.
• Perform onsite inspections to monitor compliance and best practices are followed, escalating compliance issues and trends and continually improving controls. 
• Conduct studies and determine impacts and permitting requirements needed for site expansion projects, alterations to existing facilities, maintenance activities, process changes, etc.  
• Perform environmental field sampling and interpretation of lab analysis reports
• Manage all aspects of hazardous waste generation, accumulation, labeling, storage, tracking, characterization and profiling of new and dynamic waste streams. 
• Manage aspects of the site’s Hazardous Waste Treatment, Storage, Disposal Facility permit.
• Monitor sites impacts to air, water, waste, while leveraging best practices and new technologies to drive reduction projects and achieve sustainability targets.    
• Monitor site changes to facilities, processes and purchases to ensure environmental considerations are addressed during project scoping, development & implementation. 
• Support sites emergency planning efforts related to hazardous materials, chemicals and emissions. 
• Develop and support the sites ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
• Build trust and develop collaborative relationships with county, state and federal regulators needed to facilitate open communication and address compliance concerns effectively. 
• Complete incident investigations and regulatory reporting, with corrective action follow up.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor's of Science Degree in Environmental, Safety, Engineering or Related Sciences & 5 years of related engineering experience, OR a Masters degree in a STEM field & 3 years of related experience.
• Regulatory and permitting experience navigating; Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Hazardous Waste/RCRA, EPCRA, TRI, Stormwater, drinking water and other emerging regulations.
• Experience with managing environmental compliance within a manufacturing and or development site.
• Demonstrated ability to independently prioritize, plan and execute in a rapidly changing, fast-paced environment while maintaining high quality results
• Ability to work both independently and within a team, multi-task and have strong facilitation skills

• Must have strong communication skills needed to deliver information to cross functional groups. 
• This position is part of a larger EHS team which covers multiple facilities that share goals and initiatives, so collaboration with other team members is important. 
• Experience using Microsoft Office applications; Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Strong Excel Skills, using spreadsheets to calculate and convert environmental emissions and reporting needs.  

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working with explosives or other hazardous materials.
• Experience with Hazardous Waste Treatment Storage & Disposal Permits
• Experience with implementing an ISO 14001 Compliant Environmental Management System
• Hazardous Waste Operations Certification
• DOT Hazardous Materials Certification
• Experience Navigating REACH or other European regulations 

Primary Level Salary Range: $98,900.00 - $148,300.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
