The Eddy Lab, Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow to develop novel 129Xe magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) acquisition techniques for pulmonary imaging. The project is funded through an NSERC Discovery Grant, and the PDF salary is supported through an approved Mitacs Accelerate internship with partner Siemens Healthcare Limited. This is an on-site position located at the UBC Centre for Heart Lung Innovation (HLI), St. Paul’s Hospital.

The UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Radiology is the home department for this Postdoctoral Fellow position.

HLI is a UBC senate-approved Centre located within Providence Health Care’s St. Paul’s Hospital in downtown Vancouver. HLI’s MRI Core was established in June 2021, with a focus on advanced imaging of patients with heart and lung disease. The facility houses a state-of-the-art 3.0T clinical MRI scanner and hyperpolarized 129Xe gas facility for functional imaging of the lungs. HLI is one of two centers in Vancouver and only five centers in Canada with hyperpolarized 129Xe MRI capabilities. To date, the MRI Core operates numerous ongoing clinical studies in pulmonary imaging and has amassed a pulmonary imaging registry including images from more than 500 research participants.

The PDF will report directly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Rachel Eddy. The successful candidate with liaise with Siemens Healthcare Limited partner personnel, as well as a multidisciplinary team of imaging scientists, engineers, MRI technologists, physicians, undergraduate and graduate trainees, and research technicians and coordinators.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Rachel Eddy, the incumbent will be responsible for:

• Development and optimization of rapid pulse sequences for 129Xe MRI
• Development of image reconstruction techniques for novel 129Xe pulse sequences
• Supervising undergraduate and junior graduate students, and technicians in the lab
• Developing, writing, and editing funding proposals for operating grants and fellowships
• In collaboration with the supervisor, writing research projects for publication
• Delivering scientific presentations at local, national, and/or international conferences
• Contributing to a respectful, inclusive working environment
• Conducting literature reviews and synthesizing evidence into current-state synopses to identify knowledge gaps
• Developing research protocols and leading original research projects as required
• Liaising with Siemens Healthcare Limited partner personnel and a multidisciplinary team of imaging scientists, engineers, MRI technologists, physicians, trainees, and research staff
• Performing other responsibilities, as required

Qualifications

Successful applicants will have:

• A PhD in engineering, physics, or related discipline (completed within the last 5 years, with provision for career gaps)
• Experience developing and implementing novel MRI pulse sequences; experience with multi-nuclear pulse sequence development and the Siemens MR IDEA Sequence Development Environment (SDE) are considered assets
• Experience developing and performing novel MR image reconstruction techniques; experience with multi-nuclear image reconstruction, Siemens MR IDEA Image Calculation Environment (ICE), Python and MATLAB, and deep learning techniques are considered assets
• A strong publication record demonstrating research excellence. A minimum of one first-author publication is required.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• The ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
• Excellent organizational skills, along with an outstanding level of accuracy and attention to detail
• Ability to exercise tact, discretion, and confidentiality and to contribute to a respectful, cooperative, and supportive work environment
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize work to meet deadlines
• Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
• Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

The expected salary for this position is $65,000-$80,000 per annum. The Faculty of Medicine is committed to offering equitable and competitive salaries, commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
