Title

Polysomnographic Technologist - Full Time, 36 hrs per week 7 PM - 7 AM - Bronson Sleep Health Lab - Portage, MI - $8,000 total Sign On/Retention Bonus

A Polysomnographic Technologist is an advanced, registered sleep professional who works under the general supervision of the Practice Manager for Bronson Sleep Lab or designee to independently perform, score, and support comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic sleep studies. A Polysomnographic Technologist supports accreditation quality standards, perform the duties defined for a Polysomnographic Technician and may provide supervision (including acting as a clinical resource or preceptor) of other staff, including trainees. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

  • Associate’s degree in Polysomnography, Respiratory Care, or related allied health field required or strongly preferred; or

    • At least six (6) months of direct patient care experience; or

    • successful completion in a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) program

  • Current credential in good standing:

    • Board Certified examinations with Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technology (BRPT)

    • National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)

    • American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM

    • RPSGT, or RRT-SDS, or RST BLS certification required

  • BLS certification required.

  • Essential Job Functions

  • Collect, analyze and integrate patient information to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (Physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history), and to determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols/procedures.

  • Verify medical orders and established testing protocols/procedures.

  • Prepare patients for sleep studies by explaining procedures and addressing questions or concerns.

  • Prepare, calibrate, and apply equipment, electrodes, and sensors according to accepted standards.

  • Perform physiologic calibrations and ensure signal integrity.

  • Independently score sleep/wake stages and clinical events using current AASM standards, ensuring diagnostic accuracy and clinical integrity.

  • Apply clinical judgment to recognize abnormal findings, troubleshoot study issues in real time, and escalate concerns appropriately per protocol.

  • Participate in protocol refinement and continuous improvement related to scoring accuracy and clinical outcomes.

  • Perform routine PAP mask fitting.

  • Perform sleep study procedures (e.g., MSLT, MWT, parasomnia studies, PAP titration, oxygen studies) as permitted by policy and compliance requirements.

  • Perform home sleep study procedures according to policy and compliance requirements.

  • Monitor study progress and document observations, events, and technical issues.

  • Follow “lights out” and “lights on” procedures, ensuring proper documentation.

  • Support age‑appropriate care for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

  • Oversees and performs difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions.

  • Score sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.

  • Score clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals etc.) according to specific protocols/procedures.

  • Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.

  •  Evaluate sleep study related equipment and inventory.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

  • Participate in equipment care, maintenance, and infection control practices.

  • Support compliance with AASM, Joint Commission, CMS, and payer requirements.

  • Participate in quality assurance activities including inter‑scorer reliability, chart audits, and process improvement efforts.

  • Assist in preparation for regulatory and accreditation surveys and corrective action planning as applicable

  • Serve as a clinical resource, mentor, or preceptor for other staff and trainees.

  • Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Work requiring sustained mental/visual focus and hand‑eye coordination.

  • Regular lifting of equipment or supplies up to 50 pounds, with assistance as needed.

  • Ability to work overnight shifts and in dimly lit environments common to sleep lab settings.

  • Prolonged standing, walking, bending, and reaching during overnight shifts.

  • Repetitive fine motor movements related to electrode application and equipment operation.
