Description of Work
This is a position at Marion Correctional Institution located in Marion, North Carolina (McDowell County). Marion Correctional Institution is a Close-custody prison housing male offenders. The facility is designed to house a maximum capacity of 793 offenders.Reporting directly to the Facility Maintenance Supervisor, the primary purpose of this position is to install, maintain, alter and repair plumbing systems and components at the journey level of the plumbing trade. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
• Possessing working knowledge of the installation and repair of commercial plumbing, as well as safety precautions of the plumbing trade.
• Using power tools associated with plumbing trade, cutting and threading pipe, utilizing motorized and mechanical tools, and being familiar with building, life, and safety codes.
• Making material list(s) for projects and submitting to supervisor for review.
• Making up lead joints and installing various types of plastic pipes, also knowledge in replacing stainless steel and porcelain plumbing fixtures.
• Supervising semi-skilled male offenders.
• Computer skills required to order parts and/or equipment pertaining to your assigned job.
• Cross-training required to learn other maintenance jobs that are needed to maintain a safe and secure facility.
• Must be willing to work in adverse weather conditions and being on call for emergencies is mandatory.
• Will be required to perform plumbing duties at the minimum-security facility and close custody facility.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade Range: $39,244.00 - $68,679.00

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:
Working knowledge of the methods of installation and repair of plumbing systems.

The salary grade for this position is NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase May result.
About The Division of Institutions:
The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.

Veterans’ and National Guard Preference
