Job Description – Plugin Developer

WordPress / WooCommerce / Magento

Position Overview

We are looking for an experienced Plugin Developer with strong hands-on expertise in WordPress, WooCommerce, and Magento to join our development team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, and enhancing plugins, extensions, and integrations for eCommerce platforms. You will work on solutions that integrate websites and online stores with third-party APIs, payment services, business systems, and other external platforms.

We are looking for someone who understands not only plugin development, but also the underlying architecture, security, performance, and compatibility requirements of production eCommerce environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop custom WordPress plugins and WooCommerce extensions.

• Develop and maintain Magento modules/extensions.

• Build integrations between eCommerce platforms and third-party systems using REST APIs, webhooks, and other integration methods.

• Customize and extend existing WordPress, WooCommerce, and Magento functionality.

• Integrate payment gateways, shipping providers, ERP/CRM systems, and other external services.

• Troubleshoot and resolve plugin, extension, API, and compatibility issues.

• Maintain compatibility with new versions of WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento, PHP, and related dependencies.

• Write clean, secure, maintainable, and well-documented code.

• Review existing code and identify opportunities to improve performance, security, and maintainability.

• Diagnose production issues using application logs, API logs, debugging tools, and monitoring solutions.

• Develop automated and manual tests for plugins and integrations.

• Participate in code reviews and follow development best practices.

• Work closely with product, engineering, QA, support, and other technical teams.

• Produce technical documentation, including installation, configuration, API, and troubleshooting documentation.

• Support plugin/module releases, versioning, deployment, and ongoing maintenance.

Required Technical Skills

• Strong commercial experience with PHP development.

• Strong experience developing WordPress plugins.

• Strong knowledge of WordPress Hooks, Actions, Filters, REST API, WP-Cron, database APIs, and plugin architecture.

• Hands-on experience developing and customizing WooCommerce plugins/extensions.

• Good understanding of WooCommerce orders, products, customers, checkout, payments, subscriptions, and related workflows.

• Experience with Magento 2 module/extension development.

• Understanding of Magento architecture, dependency injection, events/observers, plugins/interceptors, APIs, and extension mechanisms.

• Strong experience integrating REST APIs and webhooks.

• Experience with authentication mechanisms such as OAuth 2.0, API keys, tokens, and signed requests.

• Strong knowledge of MySQL/MariaDB.

• Good understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, and JSON.

• Experience with Git and modern source-control workflows.

• Understanding of Composer and PHP dependency management.

• Experience debugging complex integration and production issues.

• Good understanding of secure coding practices, including input validation, sanitisation, authentication, authorisation, and protection against common web vulnerabilities.

Highly Desirable Skills

Experience in any of the following would be highly regarded:

• Payment gateway or financial-service integrations.

• WooCommerce payment plugin development.

• Magento payment module development.

• PCI/security considerations for eCommerce and payment solutions.

• Experience publishing or maintaining plugins/extensions in marketplaces.

• Automated testing using PHPUnit or similar frameworks.

• CI/CD pipelines and automated deployments.

• Docker or containerised development environments.

• Cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.

• High-volume or enterprise eCommerce environments.

• Performance optimisation and caching.

• Experience supporting multiple versions of WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento, and PHP.
