About the program
Better. Together.
is a free mental health service for people aged 18 and over across the Murrumbidgee region.

We believe better mental health care happens when services work together, not separately. Our multidisciplinary teams work alongside general practices to provide care that is tailored to each person from clinical interventions and peer support through to care coordination, service navigation, social prescribing and group programs.

Our approach is person-centred, recovery-oriented and focused on the whole person. We work with participants, GPs and the wider service system to support mental, physical, social and emotional wellbeing.

About the role

As a Peer Worker, you will draw on your own lived experience of mental distress, service use, personal growth and learning to develop authentic and mutually respectful relationships with participants.

Rather than directing or advising, you will walk alongside people as equals, creating opportunities for connection, shared learning, hope and new possibilities.

You will support participants to:

  • Explore identity, wellbeing, purpose and meaning
  • Identify and pursue their own goals, hopes and aspirations
  • Strengthen self-advocacy, autonomy and self-determination
  • Understand and exercise their rights
  • Build connections with community, culture, family and natural supports
  • Develop meaningful relationships, roles and connections within their community
  • Access other services through warm referrals and supported transitions

You will also contribute your lived experience perspective to service delivery, practice development, quality improvement and organisational learning.

The role works collaboratively with participants, families, carers, General Practitioners, allied health professionals and other members of the multidisciplinary team to support holistic, person-led outcomes.

To be successful in this role, you will need the following:

  • Personal lived experience of mental health challenges, distress and/or mental health service use, with the ability to use this experience safely and intentionally in peer work.
  • Certificate IV in Mental Health, Mental Health Peer Work or Community Services (completed or in progress), or willingness to undertake relevant training.
  • Current valid Driver’s License and the ability to undertake travel for the role
  • Satisfactory Police Check (no older than 12 months)
  • International Police Check (only if applicable)
  • NSW (Paid Worker) Working with Children Check and NDIS Workers Screening Check
  • Evidence of working rights within Australia such as a passport, birth certificate or VISA
  • NDIS Worker Orientation Module completion certificate – free online course
