The Nuclear Surety & Certification lead (SP04731) for the Limited Operational Capability (LOC) branch (SP047) is responsible for planning and managing surety requirements, overseeing implementation, ensuring verification, and supporting certification for the LOC missile.  This position is responsible for managing the implementation of DoD Inst 3150.02, DoD Nuclear Weapon Systems Surety Program, requirements at the flight-system and missile level to integrate safety, security, and control policies through formalized procedures that assess and mitigate risk throughout the LOC weapon system’s life cycle. The position is responsible for surety implementation, verification, and certification for the LOC missile flight subsystem

💼What You'll Do

 

  • Serve as the principal engineer to assess surety policy and flow down implementable and verifiable missile requirements.
  • Lead oversight and approval of contractor surety implementation into missile and missile support equipment designs.
  • Represent LOC missile equities at Command-level surety meetings and forums.
  • Work collaboratively with external partners to assess, support, and document surety architectures within baseline missile design(s).
  • Advise as a surety expert and remain abreast of surety program changes and potential impacts to the LOC missile.
  • Support Engineering Review Boards (ERB), Risk and Opportunity Management Boards (ROMB), and Configuration Control Boards (CCB).
  • Assist in the oversight of Integration and Test efforts for the LOC missile inclusive of hardware, instrumentation, data collection, post-test analysis, and ship integration.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks across the system development and deployed lifecycle.
  • Support pre-certification activities to proof, exercise, and assess readiness for surety certification.
  • Support certification activities that involve missile and flight-system equities.
  • Prepare material, support preparations, and provide technical advice during certification studies and reviews.
  • Work collaboratively with the Weapon Integration Systems Engineering (WISE) surety lead for system-level assessments.
  • Advise on acquisition strategy, cost, schedule, technical trade-offs, and milestone documentation.
  • Support development of Inadvertent and Unauthorized Launch Analyses (ULA/ULA).

 

🧠What You Bring to the Table

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, Systems, or related discipline).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in defense system engineering on an MDAP.
  • Extensive knowledge of DoD Instruction (DoDI) 3150.02, Nuclear Weapons Systems Surety Program.
  • Knowledge of the DoD 5000-series acquisition policies, including DoDI 5000.88 and 5000.02.
  • Demonstrated experience in missile systems design, integration, and verification.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interface with OSD, Service PAEs, and FFRDC stakeholders.
  • Active or recently adjudicated Top Secret clearance.

Bonus Points

  • Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field.
  • DAWIA Advanced Certification in Engineering or Program Management.
  • INCOSE CSEP/ESEP certification.
  • Experience supporting nuclear-capable or strategic missile programs.
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-882E (System Safety) and mission assurance processes.

Additional Information:

This position requires regular interaction with senior DoW, FFRDC, and industry leadership. Travel (~ 50%) to test ranges, contractor facilities, weapons facilities, and government labs is required to support technical and programmatic reviews, integration events, and milestone readiness assessments.
