Course: Methods for Reading Instruction

Teacher candidates survey a variety of literacy instruction and phonemic practices. Emphasis is placed on the five elements of reading: phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This survey prepares the teacher candidate to plan and evaluate effective reading instruction that optimizes student literacy, including writing development. Effective communication techniques are reviewed and practiced with a variety of audiences teacher candidates may encounter in a classroom.

 What You Will Do:

• Facilitate classroom lecture and discussions

• Engage students in learning course objectives and topics

• Assess student performance and mentor success in the classroom

• Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement and Mission of Grand Canyon University.

What You Will Bring:

·         Preferred: Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction or Doctorate in Instructional Leadership or Doctorate in Elementary Education or Doctorate in Learning and Teaching or Doctorate in Teaching Innovation or Doctorate in Literacy or Doctorate in Reading.

·         Minimum: Masters in Education or Masters in Elementary Education or Masters in Curriculum and Instruction or Masters in Literacy or Masters in Reading AND 2 areas of exceptional expertise.

·         All instructors must have a valid state teacher certification in elementary education AND

o    a minimum of three years of experience as an elementary classroom teacher or elementary instructional specialist or 1-8 team lead or 1-8 department chair or elementary curriculum coach or new teacher mentor of 1-8 teachers AND

o    At least six graduate credits related to elementary reading or literacy or reading assessment and diagnosis.
