The Medical Dosimetrist designs the treatment plans used to provide radiation therapy to our cancer patients. With the use of complex software programs and in collaboration with the radiation oncologists and the medical physicist, the Dosimetrist utilizes images acquired, and the technology of our therapy units to set programs for the safest treatment doses with exacting location to provide accurate and effective treatment.

Relocation Assistance Available

License /Certification Required:

  • Graduate of a JRCERT-accredited Medical Dosimetry program or educational pathway meeting applicable eligibility requirements of the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board (MDCB).

  • Current certification as a Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD) through the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board (MDCB).

  • Current Basic Life Support- BLS


Experience Required:

  • Two (2) or more years of clinical medical dosimetry experience preferred.

  • Experience with Varian Eclipse Treatment Planning System strongly preferred.

  • Experience with ARIA Oncology Information System preferred.

  • Experience planning 3D-CRT, IMRT, VMAT, SBRT, SRS/SRT, and electron treatments preferred.

  • Experience with Radformation software preferred.

  • Experience with multimodality image registration/fusion, including CT, MRI, and PET/CT, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • 8/40 - 8 Hour Shift -Work Arrangement: On-site with potential hybrid work opportunities based on department needs, experience, and demonstrated competency.

  • Under the direction of the Radiation Oncologist, Physicist, or Manager, perform those duties directly involved with a variety of procedures, and prescribed treatment plans on radiation oncology patients

  • Treatment Planning and Clinical Responsibilities

  • Interpret Radiation Oncologist prescriptions and clinical intent to develop high-quality, patient-specific radiation treatment plans using appropriate treatment planning systems with a high degree of attention to detail, consistency, and patient safety

  • Design, evaluate, and optimize treatment plans utilizing appropriate techniques based on disease site, intent of treatment, and available technology, ensuring target coverage and normal tissue sparing

  • Collaborate closely with Radiation Oncologists, Medical Physicists, and Radiation Therapists throughout simulation, planning, and treatment implementation

  • Participate in peer review, chart rounds, and other multidisciplinary forums supporting plan quality and consistency

  • Documentation and Clinical Systems

  • Maintain complete, accurate, and timely treatment planning documentation within treatment planning systems, record and verify systems, and hospital EMRs

  • Ensure treatment plans, approvals, and supporting records are accurate, auditable, and compliant with departmental, regulatory, and accreditation standards

  • Initiate and document appropriate supplies and charges in applicable billing systems

  • Demonstrate adaptability and consistency when working across multiple treatment planning platforms, R and V systems, and linear accelerator technologies

  • Physics, Quality, and Technical Support

  • Work in partnership with Medical Physicists to ensure plans meet dosimetry, technical, and safety requirements prior to treatment

  • Communicates clearly, effectively, and respectfully in both written and verbal interactions

  • Uses sound judgment to address concerns and resolve issues in a professional, proactive manner

  • Maintains discretion and professionalism in all work related conversations

  • Follows established organizational structure and chain of command

  • Actively supports team success by assisting colleagues as needed and contributing to shared goals

  • Represents Physics/Dosimetry at technical staff meetings

Essential

Designs treatment plans by means of a computer and/or manual computation that will deliver prescribed radiation dose and field placement techniques in accordance with the Radiation Oncologist's prescription to a specified tumor volume.

Works closely with the Simulation therapist to coordinate treatment simulations and tumor localizations on dedicated devices, utilizing diagnostic imaging studies as indicated, for radiation oncology treatment planning.

Utilizes CT information to accurately generate a reasonable, clinically acceptable treatment plan considering dose-limiting structures while achieving optimum tumor volume coverage.

Performs/assists in patient simulation process.

Using a system established by the Medical Physicist, verifies the accuracy of all mathematical computations and notifies physicist and physician of any discrepancy.

Performs/assists in the design and fabrication of compensation filters, shielding blocks and molds as required.

Prepares both physical and electronic chart (IMPAC) for treatment delivery and verify all treatment parameters coincide with the treatment plana nd the Radiation Oncologist's prescription.

Is a resource to the radiation therapy staff in the implementation of the treatment plan including the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangements and other variables.

Assists in teaching applied aspects of medical dosimetry to students, as assigned.

Assists in providing weekly chart checks as is assigned.

Assists the Medical Physicist in performing TLD measurements as is assigned and directed.

Actively involved in the center's brachytherapy program and prepares dose calculations for brachytherapy procedures.

Works with the Radiation Oncologist on application of new tecniques in Radiation Oncology.

Is involved with practical research problems involving dosimetry.

Performs specific dose calculations on individual patients as assigned.

Participates in chart rounds.

Promotes Radiation Safety.

Provides assistance to the radiation oncology physicist regarding protection, qualitative and quantitative machine calibrations, and quality assurance of the radiation therapy equipment, as needed.

Ability to discern when to seek assistance in order to provide quality patient care and meet center's patient care objectives.

Maintains patient privacy, patient identity, and patient confidentiality, and personnel information on current and former staff members. Must be aware of The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Participates in continuing education in the area of treatment planning techniques, and advances in medical dosimetry.

Assists staff on treatment machines and in simulation room.

Represents Physics/Dosimetry at technical staff meetings.

Participates in Quality Improvement studies.

Attends staff meetings.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area. Knowledgeable of growth and development for all patient/family cultural, linguistic, spiritual, gender, and age specific needs. Able to effectively communicate and care for patient and family as reflected in the Plan for Provision of Care.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Pay Range

$64.81 -$97.21
