As a Mechanical Engineer, you’ll leverage your strong foundation in physics, mathematics, and materials science to process and resolve mechanical problems, design and implement custom mechanical tooling and associated processes, and enable the handling, assembly, and disassembly of parts, components, sub-assemblies, and final assemblies throughout the product life cycle. You'll be responsible for designing, developing, and modifying mechanical engineering layouts, schematics, and specifications. You will oversee manufacturing and installation processes, ensuring adherence to industry standards and regulations-- and you'll coordinate the procurement and assembly of mechanical components and equipment for design projects, identifying sources of critical parts and subsystems to resolve technical issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the full design lifecycle of mechanical assemblies: concept, feasibility, detailed design, prototype, test, qualification and release to manufacturing.
- Design precision mechanisms such as lens and mirror mounts, kinematic mounts, flexures, alignment stages and optical benches.
- Do engineering calculations and analysis, including tolerance stack-ups, stress and deflection, thermal expansion, stiffness, vibration and natural frequency.
- Run FEA (structural, thermal, modal) to validate designs and guide trade-offs.
- Apply GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and create complete 3D models, detailed drawings and BOMs.
- Write test plans and qualification protocols, run testing, analyze data and drive root cause and corrective actions.
- Lead design reviews (PDR/CDR) and maintain design documentation, DFMEA and design verification reports.
- Apply DFM/DFA principles and work with suppliers on manufacturability, cost and lead time.
- Deliver work on schedule and to quality and cost targets, and communicate status and risks clearly.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master’s preferred).
- 5+ years of mechanical design experience.
- Strong SPM (Special Purpose Machine) design background, from concept to detailed design.
- Strong engineering fundamentals and calculation skills: mechanics, strength of materials, machine design, heat transfer.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD and PLM tools.
- Working knowledge of FEA tools (ANSYS or equivalent).
- Sound knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, materials and manufacturing processes (machining, sheet metal, surface treatments).
- Proven ownership of design testing and qualification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in semiconductor capital equipment, metrology, inspection or optical systems.
- Knowledge of optical alignment, opto-mechanical tolerancing and thermal/vibration stability.
- Exposure to cleanroom and vacuum compatible design and materials.
- Familiarity with motion systems, precision stages and actuators.
- Experience with DFMEA, DOE and statistical data analysis.
Behavioral Competencies
- Professionalism: high integrity, accountable and dependable.
- Commitment to delivery: consistently meets schedules and quality targets.
- Ownership: takes full responsibility for subsystem outcomes.
- Analytical thinking: makes decisions from data and calculations.
- Collaboration: communicates well across functions and with suppliers.
- Continuous learning: keeps up with new tools, materials and methods.
