Working with our customer, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), and a broader network of industrial partners, the Submarine Delivery Enterprise (SDE) Collaborative Hub are on a mission to advance the UK’s submarine programme; diagnosing enterprise challenges and working together to deliver sustainable performance of the UK’s number critical defence priorities.

Join us as a Lifecycle Engineer for the Submarine Delivery Enterprise within Rolls-Royce Submarines and you will uncover a unique opportunity to work with wide-ranging stakeholders. You’ll have the opportunity to generate & develop solutions to some of the biggest problems in the Submarines enterprise.

The SDE is tasked with collaboratively enhancing UK submarine operational availability through innovative thinking, challenging the strategic norm & embracing digital technologies.

The SDE team is based in Bristol, UK. Applicants will need to be available to attend on-site meetings 3-days per week with occasional UK travel to enterprise / partner sites. What you will be doing:

As a Lifecycle Engineer for the Submarine Delivery Enterprise you will work with stakeholders across delivery programmes and enabling functions across the Defence Nuclear Enterprise and Industry. It will be your role to identify, analyse & justify enterprise improvements. These can come from across the lifecycle of a submarine, from procurement to recycling, allowing you to develop a deeper understanding of the pan-CADMID requirements of the submarine enterprise and gain exposure across our executive leadership.

Strong experience in quality or reliability engineering practice and engineering problem solving techniques, including root cause analysis, will be key in this role. You will be supported by the Rolls-Royce Lead for SDE. You will be expected to work closely with industrial partners engaged in submarine delivery.

With this exciting opportunity you will get a chance to:

  • Use data analytics and problem solving to Analyse the enterprise delivery programmes and enabling capabilities across the Acquisition, In-Service and Recycling portfolio, assessing and diagnosing enterprise health.
  • Apply understanding to Assess options to do different and redress shortfalls forecast against our future performance.
  • Engage with enterprise specialisms to Develop options and understanding to propose recommendations to our executive leadership boards.
  • Advance recommendations and improvements into formal change projects ensuring project controls and sponsorship is in place to Mobilise the initiative.
  • Support with the Operation of industry and MOD executive leadership boards, informing and facilitating cross enterprise strategic action across enabling functions and across our total submarine delivery portfolio.  

A role in the SDE presents a fantastic opportunity for exposure beyond the boundaries of RRSL and the Nuclear Propulsion Plant working closely across MOD and industry partner organisations. Our Director and executive leadership boards will expose to how strategic planning and decision making is conducted and executed in both delivery and functional capabilities.

Who we’re looking for:

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Stakeholder engagement/management; strong communication skills, the ability to identify and engage relevant people for consultation and ability to translate complex information to clear briefs. 
  • Operational autonomy and the ability to progress workload independently, synthesising information gained to define and unpack complex & open-ended objectives into actionable plans and scopes of work.
  • Experience in quality or reliability engineering practice and engineering problem solving techniques, including root cause analysis, is advantageous; capable of evaluating complex engineering issues and contributory factors across a variety of sources and over prolonged timescales.
  • Experience developing new capabilities, processes and/or implementing business change in technical areas would be advantageous.
  • Demonstrable knowledge / experience of working in the submarines support sector is a significant asset (e.g. awareness of policies, systems, data, equipment design, operation practices).

To work for the Rolls-Royce Submarines business an individual has to hold a Security Check clearance.  Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if you do not currently already have this in place.  Due to the nature of work the business conducts and the protection of certain assets we can only progress applications from individuals who are a UK national or, in MoD approved cases, a dual national.
