Performs a wide range of clerical and technical functions in support of the pharmacy department in those aspects of pharmacy that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. Functions in accordance with established guidelines under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Assists supervisor or manager in support of the pharmacy department including, but not limited to, coordination of scheduling, orienting and training new employees, and leading specific divisions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, EXPEREINCE, AND/OR LICENSURE: 

1. High school diploma or Equivalent.  

2. Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided:  

MD: Pharmacy Technician Student Permit or Pharmacy Technician License through Maryland Board of Pharmacy  

OH: Pharmacy Technician Trainee License or Certified or Registered Pharmacy Technician License through Ohio Board of Pharmacy  

PA: Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Pharmacy Technician License through the Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy  

WV: Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Pharmacy Technician License through West Virginia Board of Pharmacy 

3. Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or obtain within 15 months of hire.  

EXPERIENCE:  

1. Three (3) years pharmacy experience in one of the following areas: training, leadership, or other related specialized pharmacy experience.  

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.  They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.  Other duties may be assigned.

1. Assigns, coordinates, and monitors the workflow of Pharmacy Technicians to provide efficient drug distribution.
2. Routinely evaluates technician responsibilities and distributes in efficient and equitable manner.
3. Coordinates technician projects and assignments with pharmacy managers to achieve hospital and department goals.
4. Assists in the education and training of pharmacy technicians.
5. Conducts and documents technician departmental orientation and training.  Coordinates technician orientation in all pharmacy service areas.
6. Annually assists technician competency assessments and make improvements when necessary.
7. Coordinates continuing education programs for pharmacy technicians in the department.
8. Develops and maintains strong working relationships with external, accredited technician training programs.
9. Completes department work schedule as needed.
10. Performs the essential duties and responsibilities of a pharmacy technician when scheduled to staff and/or when working an open shift.
11. Follows up to insure that requested projects are completed properly.
12. Identifies and completes projects and initiatives independently or with minimum oversight of management.
13.
 Certain duties cannot be assigned to Pharmacy Technicians because these duties can only be performed by Pharmacists. These restrictions are regulated at state and federal levels and must be followed closely according to state board of pharmacy regulations where the Pharmacy Technician practices.

14. Independently prepares, processes and reprocesses patient prescriptions and billing.
15. Follows up with third parties on rejected paid claims prior authorizations.
16. Works and coordinates with care managers and patients on patient’s financial challenges.
17. Ensures follow up with care management regarding patient access to lower cost drugs.
18. Leads and/or assists in the coordination of various clinical initiatives.
19. Assists in the trouble shooting and problem solving of pharmacy software.
20. Conjointly with Manager, establishes schedule for technical/clerical personnel to assure adequate staffing or Pharmacy. 
21. Coordinates adjustments in staffing due to unexpected/unforeseen changes in staffing.

2. Must be able to lift 30 pounds and must be able to push 50 pounds.

Additional Job Description:

  • This Lead Pharmacy Technician will focus on system controlled substance compliance, drug diversion prevention, and investigation initiatives for all enterprise hospitals.
  • The individual selected for this position will work collaboratively across departments throughout the entire health system to guide regulatory compliance across all aspects of controlled substances and diversion.
  • This position will complete detailed investigations of events flagged for potential diversion.
  • This position will audit official controlled substance documentation (including, but not limited to, Forms 222, 41, 106) to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • This position may include occasional travel to DEA-registered sites across the health system.

  • Strong communication (both written and verbal)
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong interprofessional relationships.
  • Attention to detail with the ability to ensure independent follow up.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive patient and employee data
