As a Junior Software Engineer, you will support the design, development, and maintenance of software applications. You'll work under the guidance of senior developers and team leads, gaining hands-on experience with technologies such as Java and relational databases. Responsibilities include assisting in implementing product designs using a variety of programming languages and tools; collaborate with team members to estimate effort for development tasks and track progress; contribute to software maintenance activities such as bug fixes and small enhancements; participate in code reviews and follow established development methodologies and processes; liaise with QA and support teams to address and resolve escalated issues; continuously develop technical skills by learning new technologies and programming practices; and follow team guidelines while contributing to a culture of collaboration, quality, and accountability.
Essential: Diploma or Java Programming Certificate.
Desirable: BSc in Computer Science or a related field.
2+ years of relevant exposure, including: programming exposure through internships, coursework, or personal projects; familiarity with the software development lifecycle; experience working on real-time, web-based interfaces or portals (advantageous); and exposure to agile methodologies (advantageous).
Skills and Knowledge:
Proficiency in Java (JEE/SE) with a solid grasp of Java 8+ features; experience with Spring Boot for building REST/SOAP services; basic experience with relational databases (SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or MariaDB); understanding of SOAP and RESTful web services; familiarity with Git for version control and build tools such as Maven; experience using tools like SoapUI or Postman for API testing; strong problem-solving and analytical thinking; good written and verbal communication skills; and a willingness to learn and collaborate in a team environment.
Proficiency with AI-assisted development tools (e.g. Copilot, Claude Code) — including the ability to critically evaluate, test, debug, and integrate AI-generated code into existing systems, rather than accepting AI output at face value.
Familiarity with React (including functional components and hooks such as useState and useEffect); understanding of JSX, props, and state management; familiarity with npm and webpack; basic understanding of JUnit (Java) and Jest (React); exposure to CI/CD pipelines and deployment tools; familiarity with GitHub or Bitbucket; and understanding of DevOps principles and containerisation (e.g. Docker).
