Sobre este puesto de Junior Legal Counsel en AlgaeCal
Legal Eagle? You get a strange amount of satisfaction from tightening a liability clause, spotting a hidden risk three sections deep, and finding a solution that protects the company without bringing business to a grinding halt. If you can turn complicated laws into practical advice, negotiate firmly without making enemies, and thrive in the fast-moving world of eCommerce, marketing, and consumer health, then you might have what it takes to join the legal team at AlgaeCal.
Small Print ⇒ We’re looking for a commercially minded lawyer who can protect the business while helping it move forward. Someone who can review an influencer agreement in the morning, research a regulatory question before lunch, and calmly handle a demand letter in the afternoon without sending everyone around them into a panic.
This job will give you ALL the feels:
At AlgaeCal, we’re driven by a single idea. To end the fear of bone loss. In the United States, an estimated 54 million people have low bone density.
The good news? AlgaeCal has the world’s only clinically supported natural solution to this problem. We give hope to everyone worried about bone loss. As our Junior Legal Counsel, you’ll help protect that trust. Your work will support responsible growth, compliant innovation, and the ethical decisions that allow us to reach more people without putting our customers, our brands, or our business at unnecessary risk.
If that excites you, you’ll find no better place to continue your legal career than at AlgaeCal.
This job might be for you if you…
- Know your way around a contract. You know that the danger in a contract is rarely hiding in the font size. It’s buried in the indemnities, warranties, termination rights, intellectual property provisions, and limitations of liability. You’ve drafted and reviewed commercial agreements before, and you know how to identify the terms that truly matter for the business rather than drafting for academic rigour.
- Understand how business actually works. You don’t practise law in a vacuum. You understand that the goal isn’t simply to eliminate every imaginable risk. It’s to understand the risk, explain the trade-offs, and help the business make a smart decision. You can protect the company without becoming the Department of No. Instead, you’ll work within a team where our approach is How Can I Help.
- Can make complicated things simple. You can take a complex legal issue and explain it in plain English to someone who has never set foot in law school. You write clear contracts, practical memos, useful summaries, and recommendations that help people understand what they need to do next.
- You know when to push back. You can challenge unreasonable terms without turning every negotiation into a courtroom drama. You know when to stand firm, when to compromise, and when a seemingly small clause creates a much bigger business risk.
- You spot problems early. You naturally notice the legal and compliance issues other people miss. Whether you’re reviewing marketing copy, packaging, a product name, a supplier agreement, or a new business initiative, you know how to identify potential exposure early and recommend a practical way to reduce it.
- You provide solutions. You take the time to understand what another business unit or leader is trying to achieve, uncover the problem behind the request, and bring them a practical solution. You research the options, explain the trade-offs, and set out a clear plan that protects the business while helping everyone get to the best possible outcome.
- You care about protecting great brands. Trademarks, brand assets, product names, licensing, co-branding, and enforcement all interest you. You understand how valuable a strong brand can become, and you want to help protect it. And if you’ve got experience in intellectual property law, we’ll probably swoon.
- You’re comfortable in regulated territory. You understand that consumer health businesses operate in a complex regulatory environment. FDA, FTC, advertising law, privacy, disclaimers, licensing, and cross-border requirements don’t intimidate you. Experience in supplements, healthcare, eCommerce, or regulated consumer products would make us especially excited to meet you.
- You know when to keep your mouth shut. You’ll have access to sensitive business, employee, financial, and legal information. You treat that access to confidential information seriously. You exercise sound judgment, adhere to your professional obligations, and understand that discretion is not optional.
- You’ve already earned your legal stripes. You’ve completed a Juris Doctor, Bachelor of Laws, or equivalent qualification. You also bring one to two years of in-house legal experience or comparable commercial legal experience.
- You don’t let the little things slide. You’re obsessed with accuracy. You double-check your work, question inconsistencies, and take pride in delivering advice that people can trust.
Now, time to be honest: is this really you? If you’re nodding your head and feeling that flutter of excitement, then we can’t wait to meet you.
Other Qualities You’ll Need
At AlgaeCal, we’re going to insist that you have these 3 qualities:
- You’re humble--you put the team and others’ needs ahead of your own
- You’re hungry to learn more
- You’re people smart--in the sense that you’re a great teammate
The truth is, if you don’t have these qualities, you won’t last long at AlgaeCal. So if you’re missing one of them, be honest. Save yourself a lot of headaches and skip to a job posting that is a better fit for you.
What Will You Earn?
We believe in rewarding top talent. So let’s talk about salary once we’ve had the chance to get to know you better. Rest assured, we’re generous and offer above-market pay for the right person. If you bring the skills and experience, we’ll make sure the compensation reflects that.
You’ll also enjoy the following benefits:
- A generous healthcare package
- Monthly team events and activities
- Flexible Stat Holidays with the option to bank days for later use
- Weekly team lunches
- Casual dress code
- Incredible dog-friendly, Yaletown office one block from SkyTrain
And above all, you’ll join a team that you’ll never want to leave. Culture is everything to us. Yes, we work extremely hard to change as many people’s lives as possible. But we know how to have fun and reward ourselves too.
