Cornell Health’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers confidential counseling and psychiatric services, designed to help students with mental health concerns that may be affecting their quality of life and ability to learn. Our providers include psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and nurse practitioners from diverse cultural and clinical backgrounds. CAPS providers value students in all of their individuality, and are committed to welcoming all people with respect and sensitivity. Our providers regularly collaborate with Cornell Health’s diverse array of healthcare providers as an integrated service that support both the mind and the body.

   

The Embedded Therapists at Cornell Health's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) are fully in-person and located in satellite locations across Cornell’s campuses (Ithaca and Cornell Tech). These roles serve as members of a multidisciplinary service team with primary responsibility for ameliorating mental health conditions and related issues typically experienced by undergraduate, graduate, and professional students in academic environments.

The Embedded Therapist reports directly to the Assistant Director of Embedded Services within CAPS and maintains a close collaborative relationship with the academic college(s)/school(s) they support. Physically located within academic buildings across campus, this role provides single session therapy, short-term individual counseling, group workshops, tailored outreach and programming, referrals, consultation and additional services as needs arise. The Embedded Therapist serves as a point of contact for mental health education and prevention strategies across the academic unit(s) and will consult with staff and faculty regarding student mental health issues.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master of social work degree with “C” or “R” designation (LCSW or LCSW-R) or Doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology (PhD or PsyD) or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and 3-5 years of work-related experience.
  • Licensed in New York State.
  • Strong interest in entrenching clinical services within the culture of academics and the campus community.
  • Professional autonomy and maturity allowing for independent delivery of services in a satellite location.
  • Experience with individuals presenting with common clinical issues prevalent in college mental health including but not limited to suicidality, disordered eating, substance use disorders, depression, anxiety disorders, and trauma.
  • Effective interpersonal, written, verbal and electronic communications skills, including the ability to convey complex information in accessible terms to diverse or multicultural audiences 
  • Understanding of, and compliance with, the ethical and legal issues involved in the provision of clinical services.
  • Ability to advocate for individuals from a broad range of backgrounds. 
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. 
  • Ability to manage and carefully maintain confidential and private information; uses confidential, sensitive and/or private records and information, protects information appropriately.

  • Experience in college mental health, working with undergraduate, graduate and professional students
  • Experience working with college student services staff and faculty
  • Experience working in high performance settings
  • Experience working in an integrated healthcare environment
