Why This Role Matters

 

The Washington Post is seeking an energetic, intellectually curious and versatile journalist to join the Futures department as a general assignment reporter covering business and technology news.

This role sits at the center of a department dedicated to covering the forces that will shape the future of society, the economy and everyday life. This reporter will cover the biggest business and tech stories of the day while seeking to unearth compelling angles about markets, personal finance, energy, artificial intelligence, jobs, consumers, finance and other high-stakes areas.

We are looking for a reporter with strong news instincts and a high metabolism. As a member of the Futures department, this reporter will also work with colleagues focused on health, science, climate and the environment, as well as other reporters across the newsroom.

This is an ideal role for a journalist who enjoys both the urgency of breaking news and the challenge of helping readers make sense of emerging trends. The successful candidate will also help experiment with new storytelling formats and audience engagement strategies that position The Post at the forefront of explanatory journalism.

This position is based in our Washington, D.C., newsroom.

How You'll Support the Mission:

  • Cover breaking news and emerging developments across business and technology Identify consequential trends early and help readers understand why they matter.

  • Produce fast, accurate and authoritative reporting that balances urgency with context.

  • Develop explanatory journalism that translates complex subjects into clear, engaging stories.

  • Collaborate with fellow reporters, editors and visual journalists to produce comprehensive coverage.

  • Identify opportunities for enterprise reporting as news develops.

  • Experiment with new storytelling formats and audience engagement strategies across digital platforms.

  • Contribute to newsletters, social media, video, podcasts and other formats that extend the reach of Futures journalism.

  • A track record of producing strong reporting in a fast-paced newsroom environment.

  • Exceptional news judgment and an instinct for identifying stories with lasting significance.

  • Demonstrated ability to report and write quickly while maintaining accuracy and clarity.

  • Intellectual curiosity and the ability to rapidly develop expertise across diverse subjects.

  • Strong reporting, interviewing and source-building skills.

  • Excellent writing and explanatory storytelling abilities.

  • A collaborative mindset and eagerness to work across teams.

  • A commitment to accuracy, fairness and the highest standards of journalism.

The starting salary range for this position is $90,000 - $140,000. The actual starting salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
