Job Purpose

The Field Service Specialist provides installation support, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and on-site customer support for deployed KARNO Power Modules. This is the first dedicated field service role supporting KARNO and is a foundational position within Hyliion's field service organization, which is being built to support installations across the United States. Early deployments focus on defense and data center applications. The position begins with an intensive training period of approximately three to four months in Milford, OH, working alongside the research, development, and engineering teams as KARNO units are built and serviced during final testing, including training on heat engine fundamentals, PLCs, HMIs, and advanced control systems. The position then transitions to field installation, commissioning, and long-term on-site support at customer locations, initially across the West Coast and expanding to other regions as the installed base grows. As the service organization scales, this position helps define its processes and standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide on-site maintenance, troubleshooting, and break-fix support for deployed KARNO units, with remote support from the engineering team.
• Diagnose issues using remote monitoring systems and troubleshooting logs.
• Troubleshoot controls, instrumentation, and high-voltage electrical system issues.
• Supervise installation work at customer sites and provide the required technical support.
• Serve as the primary customer-facing technical contact during installation and support engagements.
• Complete required checklists, service reports, restart logs, and product issue logs.
• Work with the Engineering, Manufacturing, and Operations teams to communicate field issues, troubleshoot problems, and develop solutions.
• Travel to customer sites and operate a Hyliion service vehicle as needed.
• Contribute to the development of field service processes and standards as the service organization scales.
• Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned, needed, or required for the business.

Qualifications include:

• Education, Experience and Certifications
  • 5 to 10 years of relevant field service and troubleshooting experience required.
  • Electrical experience working with high-voltage systems up to approximately 800V required.
  • Experience with advanced control systems, PLCs, HMIs, instrumentation, and alarm-based troubleshooting required.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • OSHA certification preferred.
  • Electrical certifications, particularly electrical safety certification, preferred.
  • Prior experience as an electrician, industrial controls technician, PLC/HMI technician, or field service technician supporting automated equipment, power systems, or process equipment preferred.
  • Background in energy, power generation, or distributed generation preferred.
  • Experience with energy devices using natural gas or other alternative fuels preferred.
  • Prior experience supporting data center, defense, or distributed generation applications preferred.
• Skills and Abilities
  • Strong communication skills, including comfort working directly with customers as the on-site technical representative.
  • Ability to work independently in the field with remote engineering support.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve issues across controls, instrumentation, and electrical systems.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing schedules, site conditions, and customer needs.
  • Comfort operating a service van and working at customer sites for extended assignments.
  • Ability to document service work accurately and completely.

Role Classification and Working Conditions

This is an hourly, non-exempt-level position. This position typically works in a production/assembly/engineering lab environment and in the field at customer sites. Extended hours, either onsite or at field customer sites, are anticipated and overtime may be required.

Physical/Other Requirements

• Ability to travel, as needed, by plane, automobile, etc. approximately 70 to 80% of the time, including extended on-site assignments of several weeks to several months.
• Ability to operate a Hyliion service vehicle (van).
• Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and work in confined or elevated positions to access equipment and components.
• Ability to use hand and power tools and to perform work requiring manual dexterity.
• Ability to work near energized electrical systems and to comply with all applicable electrical safety and lockout/tagout requirements.
• Ability to distinguish colors and read displays, gauges, labels, and schematics.
• Compliance with all Hyliion and customer or supplier site PPE and safety requirements.
