Deliver powerful results
To achieve our vision, we are searching for an Elementary School Math Curriculum Writer Consultant with a Bachelor's Degree in education, mathematics, curriculum development, or a related field and at least three years of experience in elementary mathematics instruction, curriculum development, or assessment writing.
The ideal consultant will have demonstrated expertise in designing rigorous mathematics content that integrates conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and mathematical reasoning, with particular experience developing complex, multistep tasks tasks that require students to synthesize mathematical ideas, construct and justify models, and apply their understanding to unfamiliar situations.
If you are passionate about developing rigorous mathematics content that challenges students to think deeply, reason independently, and build lasting mathematical understanding, we encourage you to apply. Candidates with prior mathematics curriculum or assessment-writing experience are encouraged to submit examples of original instructional materials demonstrating conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and complex multistep tasks.
Project Scope & Responsibilities
- Develop rigorous mathematics content for Grades 2-5, including individual problems, instructional tasks, practice materials, lessons, and assessments aligned to New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards and Zeta's academic vision
- Design complex, multistep tasks tasks that require students to synthesize multiple mathematical concepts, apply knowledge in unfamiliar contexts, construct and evaluate mathematical models, justify reasoning, and develop original solution approaches. Ensure that cognitive demand comes from the depth of mathematical thinking rather than simply increasing computational steps
- Integrate conceptual understanding and procedural fluency by developing problems that require students to accurately and efficiently apply mathematical procedures while demonstrating an understanding of the concepts and relationships underlying those procedures
- Strengthen mathematical modeling and representation by designing tasks that require students to select, construct, and interpret visual models, equations, and representations that accurately reflect mathematical actions and relationships
- Develop high-quality instructional materials, including:
- Rigorous student-facing problems and independent practice tasks
- Lessons and instructional activities that promote mathematical reasoning and conceptual understanding
- Reteach and revision materials that reinforce grade-level concepts while maintaining appropriate rigor
- Assessments and performance-based tasks that measure mathematical understanding, application, and reasoning
- Exemplar solutions, mathematical models, answer keys, and scoring guidance
- Ensure alignment to grade-level mathematical progressions, with a strong understanding of how foundational concepts develop into more complex mathematical reasoning across Grades 2-5
- Collaborate with Elementary Mathematics leadership to establish content priorities, review deliverables, incorporate feedback, and refine materials based on instructional needs, student work, and assessment data
- Maintain a high bar for mathematical accuracy and instructional quality, ensuring all materials are clear, appropriately challenging, accessible to students, and ready for classroom implementation
We are particularly interested in consultants who:
- Have demonstrated experience developing rigorous elementary mathematics curriculum, instructional materials, or assessments
- Possess deep knowledge of elementary mathematics content and learning progressions across Grades 2-5, particularly operations, place value, multiplication, division, fractions, and mathematical modeling
- Have experience designing complex, multistep tasks problems that require synthesis, transfer, justification, and complex mathematical reasoning
- Understand how to intentionally balance conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and mathematical application within instructional tasks and assessments
- Can develop problems that require students to explain, justify, and represent mathematical relationships rather than simply calculate answers
- Are familiar with Open Up Resources, Illustrative Mathematics, or similarly rigorous, problem-based mathematics curricula
- Can independently produce polished, mathematically accurate, student-facing materials and accompanying exemplar solutions
- Have a high bar for excellence, strong attention to detail, and a demonstrated ability to incorporate feedback into revisions
- Are organized, flexible, and capable of managing deliverables within agreed-upon timelines
Engagement & Compensation
We are hiring for a project-based consulting role with an immediate start date. If selected, this role would be offered as a 1099 independent contractor engagement and would not constitute an offer of employment.
- Project duration: To be determined based on project scope and instructional priorities.
- Compensation: Between $15,000 and $25,000 per project unit (depending on experience and project scope)
- Work arrangement: Consultants will collaborate remotely or in person as agreed upon based on project needs.
- Work schedule: Flexible; deliverables, deadlines, and review cycles will be agreed upon with the designated project lead.
Consultants are responsible for their own taxes; consultants are not eligible for Zeta benefit plans.
