Job Summary

The Electrician is responsible for installation, repairs, and maintenance of the electrical equipment and fixtures of City of Dallas properties and facilities, including any labor or material used in airport field lighting, exhibit booths, city buildings, pump stations, civil defense sirens, traffic signal lighting, water and wastewater plants and other facilities or equipment used in connection with the use of electrical energy inside or outside a building or property in compliance with federal, state, and city codes updated by the latest edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC) adopted by TDLR.

Overview

The Electrician is responsible for installation, repairs, and maintenance of the electrical equipment and fixtures of City of Dallas properties and facilities, including any labor or material used in airport field lighting, exhibit booths, city buildings, pump stations, civil defense sirens, traffic signal lighting, water and wastewater plants and other facilities or equipment used in connection with the use of electrical energy inside or outside a building or property in compliance with federal, state, and city codes updated by the latest edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC) adopted by TDLR.

Essential Functions

1. Performs electrical work in the installation, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical equipment, lighting, and power circuits for the city facilities; develops and implements plans and specifications for maintenance and electrical renovation projects.

2. Troubleshoots electrical and electronic apparatus, motors, controls, and equipment by using schematics to ensure electrical power compatibility and safety of components.

3. Installs, repairs and maintains various electrical equipment such as control circuits, lighting circuits, motors, switch gear for new, temporary and existing construction and ensures equipment conforms to electrical and safety codes.

4. Inspects electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair to ensure compliance with electrical codes; tests circuits and electric components to locate broken connections or defective current-control mechanisms.

5. Documents maintenance and repair activities to provide accurate records of work performed; trains apprentice or assistant level electricians on electrical systems installation and repair procedures to ensure work is accomplished according to specifications. Attends various training sessions to develop skills and expertise. Transitions knowledge to more junior electricians.

6. Performs preventative maintenance work on electrical equipment and fixtures to detect electrical hazards; connects, pulls, and lays wires according to diagrams to install and repair fixtures.

7. Reads medium complexity blueprints or electrical diagrams to determine locations of equipment and conformance to building and safety codes.

8. Performs other work as needed or assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

1 Advanced knowledge of electrical codes and regulations.

2 Ability to provide technical expertise and direction to other electricians.

3 Ability to make accurate estimates of time, materials, and labor required for installing equipment or making repairs.

4 Skill in reading various medium complexity schematic diagrams and blueprints, troubleshooting electrical systems, and developing timely resolutions.

5 Ability to use various types of hand tools, power tools, precision testing and/or troubleshooting equipment.

6 Skill in customer service and conflict resolution.

7 Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

8 Skill in establishing and maintaining strong and effective relationships.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

High School Diploma or a 2-year technical degree.

Experience

Four (4) years of experience performing electrical maintenance and technical tasks, preferably in a municipal environment.

Licenses and Certifications

Must have a valid Texas Class C driver’s license.

Must have State of Texas Journeyman (or higher) Electrician's License.

Equivalency

• 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician and a successful completion of the Journeyman Electrician examination may fulfill the education and experience requirements.
• Associates degree or higher in an electrical wiring or technology field plus two (2) years of stated experience will meet the education and experience requirements. Journeyman License is required.

Other Requirements

• Subject to inclement weather conditions.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Must be able to assist with the installation of electrical work under the supervision of a master, senior, journeyman electrician, or residential wireman.
• Subject to varying shifts including nights, weekends, holidays and/or twenty-four/seven (24/7) emergency call out.
• Subject to inclement weather conditions.

Salary Range

 

$25.12 - $28.85

 

The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
