Why is this job a big deal?
The Domestic Buyer closes the gap between what Vesta needs and what its international pipeline can deliver on time. This role is the difference between a warehouse that’s always project-ready and one that stalls a staging or delivery date. By building a deep bench of wholesale and liquidation vendors, owning the standing replenishment program for core items like mattresses and bedding, and keeping every market steadily stocked with soft goods and decorative accessories, the Domestic Buyer directly protects Vesta’s ability to deliver a consistent, on-brand product—on time, in every market, every time.
Summary of Role:
Reporting to the Director of Supply Chain, the Domestic Buyer owns the domestic side of Vesta’s product pipeline, primarily for core staging, but expanding into interior design and other lines of business. The Domestic Buyer needs to understand the current and incoming international assortment, so that domestically sourced items create a cohesive brand experience. This role partners with the Director of Supply Chain on a recurring cadence to identify inventory gaps left by the international pipeline, builds and activates a bench of wholesale and liquidation vendors to close those gaps quickly, manages direct procurement of standing domestic items so every warehouse is always stocked, and works market by market with Creative Directors to keep a steady, reliable flow of soft goods and decorative accessories. This is a highly cross-functional, fast-moving role that requires equal comfort in weekly planning meetings and in solving a same-week inventory shortage.
Key Responsibilities:
- Inventory Planning & Domestic Gap-Fill:
Partner closely with the Director of Supply Chain on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly cadence to align on current inventory needs, inventory already in motion through the international supply chain, and the resulting gaps that must be closed domestically. Translate demand forecasts, open-to-buy, and project pipelines into concrete domestic purchase plans. Track bulk domestic PO status and ETAs, proactively flagging delays. Deliver clear, recurring reporting on gap status, buys placed, and open risk. - Wholesale & Liquidation Vendor Network:
Build and continuously expand a robust bench of wholesale, closeout, and liquidation vendors across key product categories, ready to be activated on an as-needed basis whenever an inventory gap emerges. Assess liquidation offerings served up by vendors to determine alignment with existing assortment and category needs for opportunistic inventory buys at higher margins. Vet new vendors on quality, pricing, reliability, minimum order quantities, lead time, and payment terms. Negotiate pricing and terms to protect margin while meeting speed-to-fulfillment requirements. Maintain an organized vendor database segmented by category, price point, lead time, and capacity. - Direct Domestic Replenishment Program:
Own end-to-end procurement of standard, direct-buy domestic items that support project needs but fall outside standard product-development procurement (e.g., mattresses, bedding, and pillow inserts). Set and maintain reorder points and par levels by warehouse so every location is continuously stocked. Manage the full purchase order lifecycle for these categories and coordinate with warehouse and operations teams on receiving and stock visibility. - Soft Goods & Decorative Accessory Sourcing:
Maintain a robust roster of suppliers carrying ready, in-stock inventory of soft goods (throws, decorative pillows) and accessories (vases, pots, decorative objects). Partner with the Director of Supply Chain and Creative Directors by market (Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, South Florida) to align sourcing with local design aesthetic and staging calendar. Establish a steady, predictable receiving cadence by market and monitor usage and sell-through to adjust reorder timing. - Cross-Functional Buying & Vendor Management:
Review vendor proposals and product samples, assessing quality, design, and value against Vesta standards. Negotiate pricing, terms, lead times, and order quantities across all domestic vendor relationships. Collaborate with merchandising, design, and operations teams to ensure the domestic assortment supports cross-functional needs, and stay current on market trends to identify new product and vendor opportunities. - Domestic Procurement for Additional Lines of Business:
Collaborate with the Director of Supply Chain and leaders in additional lines of business (e.g., Interior Design, Direct Furniture Sales / Enterprise Sales) to create a more centralized domestic procurement function. Removing the sourcing, product selection, negotiation, purchasing, and tracking activities from the designers will enable Vesta to scale these businesses more effectively. Leveraging best practices for domestic procurement more broadly will improve quality of execution and expand margins.
Key Deliverables/Objectives:
- Consistent, near-zero stockouts on standing domestic replenishment items across every warehouse.
- A qualified, categorized wholesale/liquidation vendor bench deep enough to close any inventory gap within an acceptable lead time.
- Reliable, predictable receiving cadence for soft goods and decor accessories in every market.
- Measurable cost savings and margin protection through smart wholesale and liquidation sourcing.
- Clear, proactive communication of inventory gaps and risks to the Director of Supply Chain well before they become urgent.
Requirements
- BA/BS degree preferred, or equivalent work experience.
- 5–7 years of buying, merchandising, or procurement experience; furniture, home goods, or textiles industry experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience sourcing through wholesale, closeout, or liquidation channels.
- Track record managing vendor relationships end-to-end: sourcing, negotiation, purchase orders, and performance management.
- Strong analytical skills with proficiency in Excel/Google Sheets; comfort working with inventory planning, OTB, and purchase order systems.
- Experience supporting multiple warehouses or markets simultaneously is a strong plus.
- Excellent negotiation, organization, and relationship-management skills.
- Ability to move quickly and decisively on time-sensitive, gap-fill purchasing opportunities.
