Overview:

The Director of Environmental Services provides strategic and operational leadership for Environmental Services and related non-clinical support functions at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The director leads a large team through managers, supervisors, and team leaders and ensures a clean, safe, compliant, and patient-centered environment for patients, visitors, and team members. The director oversees daily operations, departmental budgets, staffing, labor productivity, financial performance, service quality, hazardous materials responsibilities, and regulatory survey readiness. This leader develops and implements policies, procedures, programs, and performance standards; identifies opportunities to improve quality and efficiency; and strengthens accountability, teamwork, employee engagement, patient experience, and service excellence. The director collaborates closely with Nursing, Infection Prevention, Safety, Facilities, Patient Experience, clinical departments, and hospital leadership to support patient satisfaction and smooth hospital operations. The successful candidate will be an engaged, highly visible leader who models accountability, cultivates trust, and empowers the team to deliver consistently exceptional service.

Education:

Bachelor's degree required. Two years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the degree.

Experience:

• Progressive Environmental Services leadership experience in a complex healthcare environment. Experience in a Level I trauma center, tertiary care hospital, academic medical center, or comparably complex healthcare setting is required.  
• Leadership of large Environmental Services teams
• Healthcare regulatory standards, safety requirements, infection prevention practices, hazardous materials responsibilities, and survey readiness
• Budget management, staffing models, labor productivity, financial performance, and operational metrics
• Service quality, continuous improvement, and employee engagement
• Demonstrated success improving the patient experience through consistent cleanliness, responsiveness, service quality, and collaboration with clinical teams
• Collaboration with clinical, operational, and executive leaders
• Strong communication, relationship-building, change management, problem-solving, accountability, and organizational leadership skills

Location:

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. This is a full-time, onsite position scheduled for 40 hours per week. No travel is required.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, located in Norfolk, VA, is a 525-bed tertiary care facility that is home to the only Level I Adult Trauma Center and burn trauma unit in Hampton Roads, and also serves as the primary teaching hospital for Eastern Virginia Medical School.
