Job Description:
Our purpose is to deliver energy to the world, today and tomorrow. For over 100 years, bp has focused on discovering, developing, and producing oil and gas in the nations where we operate. We are one of the few companies globally that can provide governments and customers with an integrated energy offering. Delivering our strategy sustainably is fundamental to achieving our ambition to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner.
As a Data Scientist in the FDE team, you are embedded directly with one of bp's Upstream operating regions to find, build and deliver data science and AI solutions to the business's hardest, highest-value problems. Working alongside business customers, you close the loop between problem and working solution in days rather than quarters — building genuine trust in-region and delivering measurable value at pace. You own solutions end-to-end, from problem discovery on live data through to a working, adopted proof-of-concept, amplified by AI tooling and central flow-to-work support. Put simply, your job is to turn data into decisions.
What you will do:
- Partner with business customers in-region to surface high-value data science and AI opportunities, framing the real problem behind the stated one and delivering solutions that get adopted, not shelved.
- Build rapid proofs-of-concept on live data, engineered for scale from day one, taking ownership through discovery, development, iteration and adoption.
- Apply data science, machine learning and AI techniques to deliver measurable outcomes — cost reduced, hours freed, safety improved, production protected.
- Work alongside AI tooling as a “virtual team member” to accelerate build, compressing months of development into days.
- Coach and enable business users on AI and data tooling in the flow of their work, so capability lands where the problems are and adoption sticks.
- Follow and champion good engineering, data science and AI governance practice, keeping solutions secure, well-documented and ready to hand off to production or sustain.
What you will bring (essential):
- Around 3+ years' hands-on experience delivering data science, machine learning or AI solutions in complex, fast-paced environments.
- A degree in a quantitative field (e.g. computer science, statistics, mathematics, engineering, physics) or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong programming skills in Python (and/or R) and SQL, with the ability to build and maintain data pipelines and models.
- A proven ability to translate ambiguous business problems into working, data-driven solutions and to communicate results clearly to non-technical audiences.
- A customer-centric, pragmatic mindset with a bias for rapid value delivery and end-to-end ownership.
- Strong communication and stakeholder skills — able to build trust and work autonomously when embedded with the business.
- A continuous-learning mindset, comfortable using AI tooling to accelerate delivery.
Nice to have:
- Experience with Palantir Foundry (Ontology, AIP) — preferred, but this can be built in role through the Foundry Fellowship and on-the-job coaching.
- Experience with AI-assisted coding tools (e.g. Claude Code, Copilot).
- Exposure to cloud platforms and modern MLOps / productionisation practice.
- Domain knowledge in an operational Upstream environment (production, operations, maintenance & reliability, wells, subsurface or procurement).
- No prior experience in the energy industry is required.
This role is open to Azerbaijani citizenship applications only.
Why join us:
You'll sit at the point where data science meets the operational reality of the business, with the autonomy to take a problem from idea to adopted solution in days. You'll be backed by AI tooling, a supportive central team and the Foundry Fellowship to grow your capability fast — and you'll see the value of your work land directly with the people who use it.
