We are currently working with Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service on a permanent Consultant Anaesthetist vacancy across the area in Queensland. You’ll provide high-quality anaesthetic and peri-operative care to the Wide Bay community, while supervising and teaching registrars, trainees and junior doctors.

UK and Irish-trained anaesthetists: if you hold a UK CCT with FRCA, or an Irish CSCST with FCAI, you may be eligible for the Expedited Specialist Pathway. This means specialist registration with AHPRA without going through the standard college assessment process, so you can move from application to practising as a specialist far more quickly.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide anaesthesia, analgesia, peri-operative and related services for patients
- Participate in the after-hours on-call roster
- Provide outpatient consultations, pre-operative assessments, ward consultations and other related anaesthetic services
- Provide clinical supervision and procedural assistance to registrars, other trainees and junior doctors
- Supervise, assess and teach junior doctors who are AMC Workplace Based Assessment candidates
- Supervise the day-to-day activities of allocated junior medical staff
- Work collaboratively with other departments and the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, high-quality patient outcomes
- Deliver educational activities within the Department of Anaesthesia for medical practitioners, allied health staff and nurses
- Initiate and take part in research and evaluation with the Health Service and related academic institutions
- Participate in departmental quality assurance, including morbidity and mortality reviews, audits, case reviews and significant incident reviews
- Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical documentation and complete medico-legal correspondence promptly
- Support the Clinical Director with administrative duties on request, such as rosters, medical reports and input on equipment, policies and clinical pathways
- Work at other Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service sites in consultation with you, if required
- Take part in your own continuing professional development, annual performance appraisal and peer review
Essential Criteria to Apply
- Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA (ABA certified) or New Zealand
- Specialist registration in anaesthesia with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA), or eligibility to obtain it: UK CCT with FRCA or Irish CSCST with FCAI holders can apply through the Expedited Specialist Pathway
- Willingness to work across other facilities within Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service
- Compliance with Queensland Health vaccination requirements (Hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella and pertussis) and a TB risk assessment
Highly Desirable
- Previous experience in an acute or trauma teaching hospital
- Proven ability to work collegiately with clinicians, nursing staff and managers
- Clinical leadership skills and the ability to facilitate multidisciplinary teamwork
- A clinical or academic appointment

Location in Detail
The role is based across Hervey Bay and Maryborough on Queensland’s Fraser Coast, within the Wide Bay region, roughly three to four hours’ drive north of Brisbane. Hervey Bay is known for its beaches, relaxed coastal lifestyle, whale watching in season and as the gateway to K’gari (Fraser Island). Maryborough is a historic heritage city, so the region offers a mix of coast and community, with a lower cost of living than the major cities.
