Job Summary:

The Pharmacy Intern embedded within the Mobile Access Pharmacy Program (MAPP) supports pharmacist-led clinical services, medication access initiatives, medication therapy management (MTM) services, operational workflows, program development activities, quality improvement initiatives, and community-based pharmacy services within a hybrid mobile health and population health care model.

The Pharmacy Intern will function as both a clinical support team member and operational/program support resource while gaining exposure to community-based clinical pharmacy services, medication access programs, population health initiatives, mobile healthcare delivery models, quality improvement, and public health-focused pharmacy practice.

Job Description:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Clinical & Patient Care Support
    • Assist pharmacists with patient outreach, follow-up activities, medication access coordination, and continuity of care support activities.
    • Support patient scheduling, appointment coordination, and follow-up workflow management for pharmacist-led clinical services.
    • Assist with medication reconciliation, medication history collection, chart review activities, and preparation for Medication Therapy Management (MTM) encounters.
    • Identify patients who may benefit from pharmacist-led services through chart review, referral review, or Mobile Health Unit encounters.
    • Support patient education, medication-related outreach activities, and resource navigation activities under pharmacist supervision.
    • Assist with pre-visit planning, patient tracking activities, and preparation of pharmacist intervention opportunities.

  • Operational & Administrative Support
    • Assist with pharmacy-related workflow coordination, scheduling activities, phone tree coverage, and operational support tasks.
    • Support organization and maintenance of patient outreach monitoring, follow-up tracking systems, referral tracking activities, and scheduling workflows.
    • Assist with medication access activities including affordability resource identification, patient assistance program support, medication coordination activities, and pharmacy partner communications under pharmacist supervision.
    • Support coordination of medication-related supplies, inventory tracking activities, medication storage monitoring, and operational logistics associated with pharmacist-led services.
    • Assist with preparation and organization of materials, supplies, and documentation required for Mobile Health Unit community events and pharmacist-led services.
    • Participate in Mobile Health Unit operational support activities and designated community engagement events as needed.

  • Quality Improvement & Program Support
    • Assist with quality improvement initiatives, workflow optimization activities, implementation support projects, and operational program development activities.
    • Support data collection, data entry, reporting activities, and program evaluation efforts associated with pharmacist-led services.
    • Assist with research-related activities, literature reviews, project coordination, and dissemination efforts as appropriate.
    • Participate in development and maintenance of operational tracking tools, workflow resources, and quality monitoring processes.
    • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings, operational planning activities, workflow discussions, and program development initiatives as appropriate.
  • Documentation & Compliance
    • Complete assigned documentation, patient tracking activities, operational logs, and workflow-related tasks accurately and within established timeframes.
    •  Assist with preparation of pharmacist encounter materials, patient summaries, medication histories, and clinical documentation support activities under pharmacist supervision.
    • Maintain and update patient outreach records, scheduling trackers, referral tracking tools, MTM preparation materials, and other programmatic documentation systems.
    • Assist with data collection, data entry, quality improvement tracking, and program evaluation activities in accordance with established workflows.
    • Support maintenance of operational records, inventory tracking documentation, and pharmacy-related program documentation as assigned.
    • Maintain compliance with institutional policies, HIPAA requirements, documentation standards, and operational procedures.
    • Participate in required trainings, onboarding activities, workflow updates, compliance activities, and competency development opportunities.

  • Interprofessional Collaboration
    • Collaborate with pharmacists, physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, community health workers, operational staff, community partners, and interdisciplinary care teams.
    • Maintain professional communication with patients, healthcare team members, community partners, and external stakeholders involved in patient care and program operations.
    • Support coordination of patient care activities, pharmacist-led services, medication access initiatives, and operational workflows within interdisciplinary care teams.
    • Support a collaborative, patient-centered, and team-based approach to care delivery within Wayne Mobile Health Unit operations.

Education, Licensure/Certification, and Training:

Required Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in an ACPE-accredited Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program; preference for students entering or currently in P2–P4 years
  • Active Michigan Pharmacy Intern License or eligibility for licensure prior to hire
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Interest in community-based clinical pharmacy services, medication access, population health, public health initiatives, mobile healthcare delivery models, or ambulatory care practice.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within interdisciplinary healthcare environments
  • Comfort working within hybrid, office-based, and community-based care models
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior pharmacy work experience in ambulatory care, community pharmacy, health-system pharmacy, or patient-facing healthcare environments
  • Experience with patient outreach, scheduling workflows, medication reconciliation, or documentation activities 
  • Experience with administrative support, project coordination, scheduling workflows, data collection, or operational support activities.
  • Experience with quality improvement, research, program evaluation, or implementation-related activities.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record documentation preferred
  • Experience working with underserved, underreached, or community-based patient populations

  • Ability to manage multiple operational, administrative, patient outreach, and program support responsibilities simultaneously.

  • Ability to adapt to evolving workflows, operational priorities, and programmatic needs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Ability to appropriately escalate patient concerns, medication-related issues, operational barriers, or workflow concerns to supervising pharmacists.
  • Ability to utilize organizational tools, tracking systems, spreadsheets, and electronic systems to support patient care activities and program operations.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, problem-solving, and sound judgment while working under pharmacist supervision.

  • Compliance with all Wayne Health, departmental, and Mobile Health Unit safety policies and procedures
  • Adherence to HIPAA, patient confidentiality, and secure clinical documentation standards
  • Compliance with infection prevention and community-based clinical safety protocols
  • Maintenance of required institutional trainings, and compliance requirements

Working Conditions/Schedule:

  • Hourly position with schedule and hours determined based on operational and programmatic needs of the department, patient care activities, community programming, staffing needs, and operational priorities.
  • Responsibilities are performed through a combination of office-based activities at 400 Mack, remote patient care activities, and participation in Wayne Mobile Health Unit community-based operations.
  • Some evening or weekend activities may be required based on operational, patient care, quality improvement, or community programming needs.
  • Travel between 400 Mack and Wayne Mobile Health Unit community-based sites is expected based on patient care, operational, and programmatic needs.
  • Routinely utilizes standard office and clinical equipment including computers, telephones, electronic medical record systems, Microsoft Office applications, and virtual communication platforms.
