Job Description:

The Clinical Certified Medical Assistant (Clinical CMA) is responsible for gathering and documenting patient information, obtaining vital signs, preparing charts, coordinating care, drawing and processing laboratory specimens, supporting providers, and ensuring patients receive safe, quality, and compassionate care throughout their treatment journey. This role serves as an integral member of the healthcare team by supporting patient care, clinical operations, laboratory functions, quality initiatives, and regulatory compliance.

This role will be located at our Mount Pleasant clinic at 1300 Hospital Drive.

This role may require travel to all four (4) clinic locations as needed (Summerville, North Charleston, West Ashley, and Mount Pleasant) to support patient care and operational needs.

Responsibilities
  • Obtains and reviews medical records, laboratory results, pathology reports, imaging reports, and outside records prior to patient visits.
  • Escorts patients to exam rooms and prepares them for provider evaluation.
  • Obtains and documents vital signs, weight, pain assessments, medication reconciliation, allergies, and other required patient screening information.
  • Assists providers during examinations and procedures as needed.
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Coordinates patient flow and tracks patients through the clinic visit process.
  • Assists with prescription refill requests according to office protocols.
  • Schedules laboratory testing, diagnostic studies, referrals, injections, and follow-up appointments as directed.
  • Educates patients on testing, appointments, and provider instructions within scope of practice.
  • Performs venipuncture, capillary blood collection, specimen labeling, processing, centrifugation, storage, and shipment according to laboratory procedures.
  • Performs approved laboratory testing and quality control procedures as trained and competency validated.
  • Recognizes and communicates abnormal patient findings, laboratory results, and vital signs to providers and nursing staff promptly.
  • Assists with maintaining vaccination records and administering injections as directed by a provider.
  • Supports laboratory operations by maintaining supplies, inventory, specimen integrity, and equipment readiness.
  • Completes billing-related tasks and clinical documentation accurately and timely.
  • Maintains examination rooms, laboratory areas, and clinical workspaces in a clean, organized, and inspection-ready condition.
  • Completes daily, weekly, monthly, OSHA, and quality assurance checklists as assigned.
  • Complies with HIPAA, OSHA, CLIA, state, federal, and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, compliance activities, staff meetings, training, and competency assessments.
  • Assists with cross-coverage and staffing support across all clinic locations and service lines, including Hematology/Oncology and Osteoporosis services.
  • Collaborates with physicians, advanced practice providers, infusion nurses, laboratory personnel, front office staff, and leadership to ensure continuity of patient care.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned to support Lowcountry Oncology Associates' mission of delivering high-quality and compassionate cancer care.

Qualifications/Competencies
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, CCMA, NCMA, or equivalent) preferred or required within designated time frame.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of medical office experience preferred.
  • Oncology, hematology, specialty practice, or laboratory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, clinical workflows, and patient care procedures.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and clinical documentation.
  • Strong venipuncture and specimen collection skills.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong venipuncture, specimen collection, and laboratory processing skills.
  • Ability to recognize and communicate abnormal vital signs, symptoms, and laboratory results.
  • Experience using Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and maintaining accurate documentation.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, HIPAA, infection control, and patient safety standards.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care and excellent customer service.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to travel, cross-train, and support multiple clinic locations as needed.
