About the Role

The Department of Medicine at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is seeking a visionary physician leader to serve as Division Chief of Gastrointestinal (GI) Medical Oncology. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead and expand a nationally recognized GI oncology program within an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center dedicated to advancing innovative therapies, multidisciplinary care, and translational cancer research.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of GI cancer treatment for patients with colorectal, pancreatic, hepatobiliary, and upper gastrointestinal malignancies. Working within a highly collaborative academic environment, this leader will partner closely with experts in GI surgery, radiation oncology, gastroenterology, pathology, radiology, translational science, and clinical research to drive programmatic growth and elevate patient outcomes.

This position is ideal for an accomplished academic oncologist who is passionate about strategic leadership, mentorship, clinical innovation, and expanding translational and clinical research initiatives in gastrointestinal oncology.

What You’ll Do

• Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology division
• Recruit, mentor, and support attending physicians, advanced practice providers, and multidisciplinary clinical teams
• Collaborate closely with GI surgery, radiation oncology, gastroenterology, pathology, and supportive care teams to deliver coordinated patient-centered care
• Develop and implement clinical pathways that enhance quality, consistency, operational efficiency, and patient experience
• Support continued growth and expansion of GI oncology services across colorectal, pancreatic, hepatobiliary, and upper GI malignancies
• Define and advance the clinical and scientific vision for the GI oncology program
• Expand access to clinical trials and increase patient accrual across GI oncology disease sites
• Foster translational research collaboration between laboratory scientists and clinical investigators
• Partner with investigators across Roswell Park and external institutions to strengthen research initiatives and scientific impact
• Support development of innovative therapies, immunotherapy strategies, and investigator-initiated research programs
• Elevate the national and international visibility of Roswell Park’s GI oncology program through scholarship, collaboration, and academic leadership
• Teach and mentor fellows, residents, advanced practice providers, junior faculty, and trainees
• Foster academic growth, faculty development, and leadership cultivation within the division
• Support an educational environment grounded in collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning
• Serve on departmental and institutional committees supporting strategic and operational initiatives
• Participate in translational research groups and interdisciplinary academic collaborations
• Contribute to institutional growth strategies and multidisciplinary oncology initiatives
• Foster a culture aligned with High Reliability Organization principles emphasizing excellence, accountability, safety, and teamwork

The Gastrointestinal Oncology Program at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is nationally recognized for its multidisciplinary approach to GI cancer treatment, translational research, and clinical trial innovation. Faculty collaborate across medical oncology, GI surgery, radiation oncology, gastroenterology, pathology, genomics, and translational science to deliver cutting-edge therapies and comprehensive patient-centered care.

What You’ll Bring

• MD or MD/PhD with significant expertise in Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology
• Academic accomplishments consistent with appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level
• Demonstrated leadership experience within academic medicine, oncology program development, or multidisciplinary cancer care
• A strong commitment to multidisciplinary, patient-centered GI oncology care
• Experience leading or expanding clinical and translational research initiatives
• Passion for mentorship, faculty development, and academic leadership
Interest in expanding clinical trials, translational science, and innovative treatment strategies
• Executive presence, strategic vision, and the ability to foster collaboration across clinical, scientific, and institutional teams
• A collaborative and intellectually curious approach to advancing GI oncology care and research

Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience

License and Certification Requirement
1. License to practice as a Medical Doctor in the State of New York or License to practice as a dentist in the State of New York as required for the area of expertise.
2. Possession of a valid medical specialty certificate in area of expertise

Education and Experience
Medical Doctor degree or Doctor of Dental Science degree as required for the area of expertise, and the equivalent of one (1) year of full-time experience in the area of expertise including six (6) months in a supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial or executive capacity.

NOTE:
Required degrees must have been granted by an accredited school, college or university or one recognized by Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center as following acceptable educational practices.

Preferred, but Not Required
• Track record of NIH funding and publication in high-impact scientific journals
• Experience as a physician-scientist with active laboratory research and transferable funding
• History of investigator-initiated clinical research and clinical trial leadership
• Expertise in immunotherapy development and novel therapeutic approaches
• Interest in strengthening national and international visibility in GI oncology
• Dedication to fostering a culture grounded in innovation, inclusion, accountability, compassion, safety, and High Reliability Organization principles
