Job Description Summary

The Athletic Trainer Certified (ATC) serves as a physician extender within the Orthopaedic Trauma Division, supporting attending physicians and advanced practice providers in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care. Working under the supervision of licensed MUSC attending physicians, the ATC assists in the coordination and delivery of clinical services across the orthopaedic trauma practice.

The ATC is responsible for providing direct clinical support to orthopaedic trauma physicians in ambulatory clinic settings and may be required to travel to multiple MUSC clinic locations to meet operational needs. Responsibilities include assisting with patient care activities, facilitating efficient clinic workflows, supporting care coordination, and contributing to positive patient outcomes. Additionally, the ATC provides limited administrative support to attending physicians as appropriate to ensure the effective operation of the clinical practice.

All duties are performed in accordance with established clinical protocols, departmental guidelines, and applicable regulatory standards under the direction and supervision of a licensed MUSC physician.

Job Description

Location: MUSC Health West (West Ashley) and MUSC Health Chuck Dawley (North Charleston)

Schedule: Monday - Friday, Days

Minimum Training and Education:

• Successful completion of the National Athletic Trainer's Association Board of Certification (BOC) examination;

• Current active certification as an Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainer's Association;

• Current active licensure by the Department of Health and Environmental Control to practice as an Athletic Trainer in the state of South Carolina or gain SC licensure within 6 months upon selection for position;

• Participation in continuing education (50 CEU's every 2 years).

Preferred Qualifications:

To best assist the Sports Medicine physician in clinical practice, the Athletic Trainer should have the following qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in Athletic Training or other appropriate field;

• Possess previous Sports Medicine, Orthopaedic experience;

• Have experience with clinical Orthopaedic operations.

Degree of Supervision: Supervised by the Chair and supported attending physician.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

• Provide Direct Patient Care and Clinical Support

  • Serve as a physician extender in the ambulatory clinical setting under the supervision of a licensed attending physician(s).

  • Triage patients and prepare them for physician examinations, procedures, and treatments.

  • Assist physicians and advanced practice providers with patient examinations, procedures, treatments, and clinical interventions.

  • Administer medications, treatments, and diagnostic tests as prescribed and delegated by the supervising physician in accordance with scope of practice.

  • Observe, document, and communicate changes in patients' physical and psychosocial conditions, including responses to treatments and medications.

  • Respond to and appropriately triage patient phone calls, portal messages, and clinical inquiries.

  • Provide patient education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, post-procedure care, and follow-up instructions as directed by the physician.

  • Process and communicate physician orders accurately and in a timely manner.

• Coordinate Patient Care and Optimize Clinic Operations

  • Facilitate efficient patient flow throughout clinic sessions to support timely access to care and operational efficiency.

  • Review and maintain patient medical records, ensuring documentation is complete, accurate, and communicated appropriately to the care team.

  • Communicate test results and post-operative information to patients as directed by the physician.

  • Educate patients on rehabilitation protocols, therapy plans, durable medical equipment, braces, casts, and post-operative care requirements.

  • Assist with cast and brace application, wound care, patient preparation, and other clinical support activities within scope of practice.

  • Support providers during high-volume clinic sessions and surgical preparation activities as needed.

  • Collaborate with surgery schedulers, central scheduling, clinical staff, and ancillary services to ensure coordinated patient care and timely access to services.

• Maintain Clinical Equipment, Supplies, and Regulatory Compliance

  • Monitor and maintain inventory of clinical supplies, orthopedic equipment, and examination room materials to ensure operational readiness.

  • Maintain exam room cleanliness and organization in compliance with OSHA, infection prevention, and institutional standards.

  • Ensure proper calibration, maintenance, cleaning, and documentation of clinical equipment according to applicable regulatory and organizational requirements.

  • Monitor supply utilization and communicate inventory needs to appropriate personnel to prevent disruptions in patient care.

• Provide Administrative and Operational Support

  • Complete and coordinate patient-related documentation, including disability forms, FMLA paperwork, prior authorizations, and other medical forms as required.

  • Support attending physicians with administrative tasks related to patient care, scheduling, and practice operations.

  • Participate in departmental meetings, educational programs, quality improvement initiatives, and committee activities as assigned.

  • Maintain compliance with departmental policies, organizational procedures, and applicable accreditation and regulatory requirements.

Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
